What travel documents are required for a Lhasa to Kathmandu tour?
First, make sure you have a Chinese Visa or can enjoy a visa-free stay in China. Then, you need to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Once you book your tour with us, simply email us the photos of your passport and Chinese Visa. We will handle the rest for you and deliver the permit to your hotel in the mainland of China in time. With the Tibet Permit, you can board a train or flight to Tibet.
An Alien’s Travel Permit is also required for a Lhasa to Kathmandu tour as you will pass through the Everest Region. It will be applied for after you arrive in Tibet. There is no need to worry about. Our Tibetan guide will help you get it and ensure a smooth travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu.

How to get a Nepal visa to enter Kathmandu from Tibet?
It is very convenient to get a Nepal Visa On Arrival at the Gyirong border as you leave Tibet (China) for Nepal. Make sure to have your passport and cash ready (60 USD in US dollars) to pay for the visa fee.
It only takes several minutes to get the Nepal Visa. But during peak season, you may need to wait in line for thirty minutes or longer to cross the border.

What is the best time to travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu?
April to May and September to October are the best time for Lhasa to Kathmandu overland tours, regarding the Himalayan vista. As traveling across the Everest region from the northern side to the southern side, you can enjoy clear views of the majestic mountain ranges and snow-capped peaks in these months.
If you can only arrange your journey in summer, pay attention to the dense clouds and rainfall, as it is the rainy season. The peak of Mount Everest may be covered by clouds, which could be a pity that you miss the top of the world. Also, the road from the border to Kathmandu may be in bad condition during the rainy season.
The winter season from November to February can be the best time for budget travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu. During the low season of Tibet tourism, you can get more discounts and enjoy the least-crowded attractions in Tibet.

How many days are necessary for a Lhasa to Kathmandu tour?
Generally, the Lhasa to Kathmandu overland tour takes 7 days, including a night stay at Everest Base Camp in Tibet.
Before entering Nepal, you can also visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. The overland journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu with the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra takes 13 days.

How about the road conditions from Lhasa to Kathmandu?
The road conditions in Tibet are quite good, as all are well-paved asphalt roads, even the road to Everest Base Camp. While driving through the fine road on the Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway, you will enjoy the stunning landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau.
However, road conditions in Nepal are poor. From the border to Kathmandu, the roads are almost mountainous, with uneven and narrow surfaces that are prone to landslides or collapses during the rainy season.

What about the accommodation for the journey?
For the classic 7-day Lhasa to Kathmandu overland tour, you will stay in 4 places: Lhasa, Shigatse, Everest Base Camp, and Kyirong border. In terms of accommodation facilities, Lhasa and Shigatse have the best facilities and broad hotel choices. Whereas, the choice and facilities of accommodation at EBC and Kyirong border are extremely basic and humble, due to the high altitude and limited resources.
At Everest Base Camp, you can choose to live in either a Tent Hotel or the Rongbuk Hotel from April to October. In winter, the tent hotels will be closed and you can only stay in the Rongbuk Hotel or live in a guesthouse in a local village at the foot of Mount Everest.

For clothing, it’s better to dress in multiple layers, since the weather in Tibet varies dramatically in a single day. Bring your thermal underwear, down jacket, fleece jacket, sweaters, shirts, jeans, multiple socks, comfy sports shoes, beanie, gloves, and sun-protection gears like sunglasses, sunscreen, sun hat; other gear like toiletries, slippers, vacuum flask, and personal medicines, esp. cold relief and altitude sickness pills, motion sickness pills, etc.
