Welcome to Lhasa(3650m)!

When you arrive in Lhasa, whether by train or flight, our friendly Tibetan guide will greet you with a Hada (the traditional Tibetan ceremonial scarf) and warm blessings.

Then, the guide and the driver will take you to your hotel in downtown Lhasa. You may view the Yarlung Tsangpo River/Brahmaputra River (the Longest and largest river in Tibet) and Lhasa River.

After settling into your hotel, take some time to rest and adjust to the high altitude.

In the afternoon or evening, your guide will meet you with traditional Tibetan gifts, provide travel instructions, and introduce your group members.

Day 2: Lhasa Tour - Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery (B, D)

Today is Tibetan Monastery Day! You’ll have a full day to explore the largest monastery in Tibet, delve into the knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism, and immerse yourself in the daily life of Tibetan monks.

In the morning, you’ll explore the largest monastery in Tibet - Drepung Monastery, which was once the home to over 10,000 monks. As you walk through the Coqen Hall, your guide will provide detailed explanations of the worldview of Tibetan Buddhism and introduce notable figures in Tibetan Buddhist history.

Next, you’ll visit the renowned Loseling College (or an equivalent), offering a glimpse into the study and life of Tibetan monks. Explore their dormitories to gain insights into the Tibetan monks' daily routines and living conditions.

In the afternoon, you’ll head to Sera Monastery, another of the ‘great three’ Gelug monasteries of Tibet, to witness the famous Tibetan Monks Debate (15:00 - 17:00, from Monday to Saturday). Your guide will intricately explain how Tibetan monks engage in these debates to acquire knowledge and advance in their academic degrees.

After today’s tour, enjoy a welcome dinner with your group members.

Day 3: Lhasa Tour - Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street (B)

Today’s Highlight is a visit to UNESCO World Heritage Sites Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, providing a glimpse into the daily beliefs and lives of the people of Lhasa.

After breakfast, your first stop is the Potala Palace, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Lhasa Old Town. Discover the lives and stories of the Dalai Lamas through history within the palace, and the extraordinary treasures it holds. The most valuable collections of Potala Palace are the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave of the 33rd great king of Tibet.

After touring the Potala Palace, you will visit Longwangtan Park at the foot of the Potala Palace. Here, you can appreciate the majestic Potala Palace from a different perspective and engage in local Tibetan folk activities.

In the afternoon, you will head to the heart of Tibetan religion - the Jokhang Temple. Inside you can see the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve. Outside, you can see pilgrims making prostrating in front of Jokhang Temple. Around the temple is Barkhor Street, where you can do kora (a religious circle of a building or mountain) with pilgrims and locals, and explore the old market.

Next, follow your guide to one of the liveliest indoor Tibetan tea houses in Lhasa. Sip traditional Tibetan sweet tea alongside local Tibetans as your guide shares insights into Tibetan social dynamics and daily life.

Day 4: Lhasa - Gongga - Yamdrok Lake - Lhasa (B, L)

This is the day excursion to Yamdrok Lake, one of the ‘Three Holy Lakes of Tibet’.

After breakfast, you’ll take a scenic 100-kilometer drive from Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake, a turquoise gem surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Here, you’ll experience a different side of Tibet - the peace and tranquility outside the bustling Lhasa city. The Yamdrok Lake reflects various colors in different lights. You can also see local nomads grazing their yaks on the lakeshore.

Start your Yamdrok Lake tour from Lurila Platform, where the turquoise waters and the imposing Gulha Kangri Snow Mountain unfold before your eyes.

Then, you will visit the Rutog Monastery and the lonely monk residing on the small island in the center of Yamdrok Lake. From Rutog Island, you can enjoy a broader view of Yamdrok Lake and the surrounding islands.

For lunch, you will visit a local family restaurant and enjoy the local dishes by the lakeside. On the platform, you can also savor a cup of coffee and relish leisure time while indulging in the stunning view of Yamdrok Lake from the southeast corner.

Afterward, you will return to Lhasa via the famous Gampala Pass (4900m). From the Gampala Pass platform, you can see Yamdrok Lake stretching for tens of kilometers like a wide blue ribbon to the foot of Noijin Kangsang Peak (7191m).

1. How far in advance should I book the Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake small group tour?

To ensure a smooth journey, it is recommended to book the tour at least 15-20 days before departure.

Of course, booking 1 or 2 months or even earlier will help us apply for necessary travel documents on your behalf and make advance reservations for accommodations.

Additionally, early booking provides the opportunity to enjoy early bird discounts.

The earlier you book, the better prepared you'll be, and you won't be troubled in a rush.

2. What Travel Documents Required for the Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake small group tour?

To visit Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake, you need to have both Chinese Visa and Tibet Travel Permit in advance.

We’ll take care of Tibet Travel Permit as part of our tour package. Simply follow our guidance, and there’s no need to worry about the process.

3. How to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit and how long can I get my Tibet Permit?

Once you book your Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake tour with us, simply provide scanned copies of your Chinese Visa and a valid passport (with at least 6 months of validity).

If you traveling with a work visa, you will need proof of employment in China, and a study visa requires proof of your study in China.

Generally, it takes 7-14 working days to process the Tibet Travel Permit. Once the permit is successfully issued, we will mail it to your address in China 3-5 days before your Tibet trip, ensuring you can smoothly board the train or flight to Tibet.

4. How to prevent high altitude sickness during the trip from Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake?

While Lhasa is situated at an altitude of 3650 meters above sea level, Yamdrok Lake is slightly higher, at an elevation of 4441 meters. And the highest point of the trip from Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake is at the Gampala Pass, which is 4900 meters above sea level.

If you are visiting Tibet for the first time, there is a potential risk of experiencing altitude sickness.

However, there's no need to worry. During the initial 3 days in Lhasa, you will have ample time to acclimate to the high altitude of the Tibet Plateau. Then, when you visit a higher altitude on the 4th day, you will quickly adjust to the elevation.

Additionally, it's advisable to avoid strenuous exercise upon your arrival in Lhasa. Instead, take the opportunity to rest in the hotel on the first day.

Remember to stay hydrated by drinking more water and minimizing alcohol and smoking.

Please do not exercise strenuously when you first arrive at Gampala Pass at 4900 meters.

5. When is the best time to visit Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake?

The best time to explore Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake is from April to October, offering pleasant weather and comfortable temperatures for outdoor sightseeing.

Summer is also a good time to to explore the enchanting landscapes of Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake. In the period between May and September, the grasslands surrounding Yamdrok Lake flourish with lush greenery, elevating the scenic beauty of the lake and its environs.

Winter months, from November to February, is the best time for a snowy view of Yamdrok Lake. You’ll be amazed by the green and blue lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Concerns about winter temperatures are alleviated, as daytime temperatures from November to February often exceed 10°C, providing a comfortable setting for your exploration of Yamdrok Lake.

Winter is also the best time for a budget-friendly travel, taking advantage of winter tourism policies that include free admission to attractions and discounts on hotels and flights to Tibet.

6. What to wear for a Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake small group tour?

Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake are available to visit all year round. Regardless of the season, it's necessary to bring a warm jacket to stay cozy. In summer, light clothes are sufficient, but in spring and fall, it's advisable to wear three layers—such as a base layer, a sweater, and an outer jacket. For winter, ensure you have a windproof jacket. Layering helps you adjust to temperature changes. Additionally, due to the strong sun in Tibet, sunglasses and hats are a must.

7. What to pack for a Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake small group tour?

Besides the clothes to take, here are some more things to prepare for your trip to Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake.

Personal Care: Pack your essentials such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, facial cleanser, towels, and other personal toiletries. Since there are no shower facilities at Everest Base Camp, consider bringing wet wipes for convenience.

Skincare: Due to the dry climate in Tibet, pack lip balm, moisturizing cream, and hydrating masks to prevent skin dryness and cracking.

Sun Protection: Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and sunglasses for effective sun protection against the strong UV rays in Tibet.

Additional Necessities: Considering the long distances between attractions in Tibet, bring a U-shaped pillow for a comfortable journey. Also, having a thermal flask ensures you have hot water whenever needed.

Common Medications: Take essential medications like motion sickness pills, gastrointestinal medicine, anti-inflammatory drugs, cold medicine, and other medications for emergencies. Include adhesive bandages and eye drops. (Consult your doctor and carefully follow medical advice when taking medication.)

Electronic Devices: Bring your phone, camera, power bank, and any other necessary electronic devices. If you plan to bring a drone, check with our travel consultant in advance. Tibet operates on a 220V voltage.

Cash and Cards: Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely accepted in Lhasa. Credit cards can be used in some large hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls in Lhasa. However, in some small restaurants and shops, cash may still be necessary. It's advisable to carry a small amount of Chinese yuan and at least one bank card with you.

What a great experience, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish, helped by the meticulous planning by Susan Lee in the office in Chengdu and by the hard work of our guide Lhak Pa. I visited Kathmandu and the office also organised the Mountain Flight passed Everest which was simply awesome, then a personal tour of several of the temples in Kathmandu and then some villages outside the city. This was then followed by the 8 day Base camp tour from Lhasa, with a really friendly group of 10 travellers, a fantastic time was had by all, and capped off by the two day train journey to Shanghai. Hotels were all good and the whole trip exceeded my expectations, so I can recommend the company, the organisation and the guide!

15 Days Kailash and Manasarova Small Group Tour - with the guide Jamyang Tsering and driver Donten. I was satisfied with pretty much everything. The bus was comfy, the driver responsible, the guide bent over backwards to satisfy everybody and to help people who got sick. Its not easy to get to Kailash because of the terrible roads and altitude but in the end its all worth it :).

Starting for Drepung & Sera Monastery, Potata Palace, Kora @ Pentchant Lama’s Monastery In Shigate to EBC, Lake Manasarovar and Kailash Kora. Cannot say enough good about our guide, Jamyang Tsering, who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Tibetan culture and history. First my logistic was perfect organized by Mr.Jim Pel that provided me with the necessary tickets and aprovals.

Second the tour guide Mr.Tenzen was very friendly ,hepful and with profound knowledge of the history and culture of Tibet,taking care of all our necessities.

The acomodation was excelent and according to our expectation,even we choosed to sleep in tent house and not in a regular house. The owners of the tents tried their best to provide us with maximum confort according to those specific conditions.More

And seeng the Everest at sun set (with the help of the weather) was indeed very special.

I'll recomend this tour to everyone who don't have special problems with the health.

Best Trip I have ever had in my life..7 days Lhasa and Kathmandu overland trip.

I should say its 10 out of 10, very nice excellent tour, all our permits/tickets/air/train/hotels/tents/everything was arranged in advance. Cindy our tour consultant was amazingly active and quite fast in arranging my travel. I had an excellent trip also who accompanied us with our Tour guide by the name Tsedon, she was amazing and fantastic, who had full knowledge of the Tibetian history and details of each and every visit which we made during the entire trip. Very friendly,helpful, and she attended to all our needs and made us really comfortable during the entire journey.More

Mount Kailash 13 day tour

An interesting tour of monasteries, local towns and an epic trek round Mt Kailash with an extremely good guide, Nawang Tenzin. The Tibetan people are really lovely with beautiful smiles and the land is the same.

Beware the long bus journeys and 3 day trek which was difficult in terms of altitude.

I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Kristen liaised with plenty of information prior to the trip and warned about the road conditions, the toilets, lack of showers in places etc. I think all of these points are really important, and I appreciated being mentally prepared for all of these, as well as bringing wet wipes, prunes, toilet paper and a neck pillow. There are long days in the bus where natural toilets are way better options than manmade ones. I was very appreciative as my tour guide Pasang was always considerate of the fact I was the only female on the trip, and he was proactive in finding me a spot.More

The tour was broken up with days traveling and monetary visits, time taken at the lake, Glacier and other various photo opportunities. Pasang gave us ample information to understand what was happening, what we were doing next and from the outset he called us friends and really meant it. He was very relaxed and approachable and managed to explain complex ideas in the monasteries etc in an easy to digest way, even for people with no prior knowledge. Pasang was awesome in that he kept tabs on everyone’s interest/energy levels and adapted his level of detail accordingly. He also provided coffee at break times on the journey which was a saviour to most on the bus each morning.

The one thing I was a little nervous about prior to this trip was altitude sickness. What I really liked about this tour is that you gradually get higher and higher in altitude so it gives you a chance to adapt. You get a few days in Lhasa to become accustomed before getting more out and about. I think actually Pasang switched up the order of a nights accommodation to make it easier for us finding it harder to adjust. One thing I recommend that saved me and my afternoon/early morning headaches (once I had had plenty of water) was coke. Normally don’t drink the stuff but it really did help with my aggressive/persistent headaches. These are available most places so that was lucky. Pasang also had plenty of oxygen canisters available but I wasn’t feeling short of breath so didn’t use them.

Highlights for this trip are definitely Everest Base Camp and Mt Kailash, plus a surprise Glacier on route. The driving days are long to get to Mt Kailash but 100% worth it. Our driver did such a great job. The roads are mostly sealed, but even so, he had to watch out/slow down for holes/uneven surfaces. Roads are being improved at the moment which meant we had to off-road for a whole section but our driver was confident throughout. Definitely bring a neck pillow, you get bounced around a fair bit which rocked quite a few people to sleep each day. You really start getting a feel for rural Tibet by taking the time to get that far west and the fact that basically everyone is hiking the Kailash Kora as part of a pilgrimage adds to the experience. We saw only one other group of non-Tibetans during the 2.5 day hike. Day one of the hike is a nice stroll, and a great way to get your body used to it all. Day two is a big day. Early start to tackle a pass which you keep thinking is almost in reach. The ground is rocky and I definitely recommend poles (which you can pick up for cheap in the town you begin the walk). The downhill part is quite steep and more loose dirt than the other side. After you have made it down that section you are welcomed to a tea house for lunch and then it is flat and chilled for the afternoon. Day three is a breeze although the body is pretty knackered by this stage. Definitely pack as light as possible! Water is available in all of the tea houses along the way so carrying a couple of small bottles at a time is fine. Food is instant noodles during the day, so you tend to get a bit done with them, but they are enough. Less

Tibet/Lhasa-Mount Everest base camp- Nepal border

Fantastic 8 day trip starting Tibet-Lhasa 3 days,5 days through Tibet to Mount Everest base camp and then on to Nepal's border. The whole trip was well planned by Tibet Vista, the guide was very knowledgeable and told us everything we needed / wanted to know about historical monuments and culture. There was plenty of time at all the different sights we were at, so no stress. All the hotels were of very good standard and good breakfast. We are super happy with our trip through Tibet, we will go home so much richer on everything.
