Most of them choose to start from Lhasa and then drive all the way to the Everest Base Camp (EBC, at an elevation of 5200 meters). Gyantse and Shigatse are absolutely 2 must-go cities with profound culture and history. Tourists could also visit Yamdroktso Lake, Karola Glacier and Tashilhunpo Monastery on the way. After the amazing Mt. Everest tour, they can either return to Lhasa or go westward to Nepal.

Permits to Visit Mount Everest in Tibet

It is mentioned countless times in our website that foreigners traveling in Tibet need to apply for various kinds of permits. Then what documents are required when planning a trip to Mt. Everest? Because this mountain is situated in China’s border area, every foreign traveler needs to apply for at least two permits.

To visit Mount Everest in Tibet, you need to have Tibet Travel Permit and Alien’s Travel Permit. The former allows you to enter Tibet legally while the latter permits you to visit restricted regions like Everest Base Camp.

For our clients, you may enjoy our free service to get Tibet Permit before heading to Lhasa. As you leave Lhasa for EBC, our Tibetan guide will help you get Alien’s Travel Permit in Shigatse.

Simply focus on your tour experience; everything is in our control.

How Can I Get My Tibet Permit?

The processing of Tibet Permit takes 8-9 business days in Lhasa. After we get your Tibet permit, we deliver it by express to your hotel in mainland China. Or in some extreme cases, our staff will give it to you in person at the railway station or airport.

Note: Because this permit needs to be delivered to travelers from Tibet, you’d better provide necessary documents 10 or 15 days before the tour. You will be asked to show valid permit before boarding a train or a plane. By the way, the travel agency will charge some service fee for the permit application.

Alien’s Travel Permit for Mount Everest Visit

In addition to Tibet Permit, you need Alien’s Travel Permit issued by the Public Security Bureau at the cost of CNY 50, without which travelers won’t even be able to reach the Everest Base Camp in Tibet. However, there is no need for you to bother to get it. Our Tibetan guide will help you get it at the Foreign Affairs Office in Shigatse before the team leaves for EBC. The processing of it takes around 1.5hrs. The documents needed include:

1. original copy of Tibet Travel Permit
2. original copy of passport
3. original copy of your tour guide’s certificate
4. tour itinerary

What Permits Do I Need to Visit ABC from EBC?

If you plan to challenge your physical limit to trek from EBC (5,200m) to ABC (6,400m-6,500m), you need to apply for Tibet Trekking Permit. Our Tibetan guide will help you submit the permit application at the Tibet Mountaineering Association (TMA).

However, to protect the environment of Mt. Everest, Tibet Trekking Permit service was canceled in April 2018. So far, there is no sign showing when it will be resumed. Yet, we promise to inform you in the first place if it becomes available.

Note: If your destination is no higher than the ABC, you can find a Tibet travel agency to make arrangements for you; otherwise, all the services must be arranged by the Tibet Mountaineering Association.
