How to Get Tibet Permit in China
As China’s economy soars recently, foreigners swarm into the country. Chinese official data suggests that 20,270,000 aliens got into and departed from China in 2000, up 13 times from 20 years ago. This number reaches 54,351,500 in 2012. The purposes of visiting China vary: travel, business, work, study, visiting relatives, etc.
Tibet is linked with Mainland China by railways and airlines. Tourists can choose either the famous Tibetan railways starting from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing and Guangzhou to Lhasa, or dozens of flights departing from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shangri-la, and Xi’an. Tibet, being the most marvelous scenic attraction with the highest elevation, appeals to every single traveler at home and abroad. In addition, the convenient transportation provides an easy gateway.
How do foreigners working or traveling in China get the Tibet Travel Permit?
To start with, we have to figure out where to apply for this permit. Although Tibet Tourism Bureau has opened branch offices in Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, its head office in Lhasa is the only option for aliens. You need to provide detailed tour information: tour itinerary, passport and Chinese visa to the Tibet Tourism Bureau Lhasa Office. Foreigners working in China, have to provide the certificate of incumbency in addition. The procedure usually takes about 10-15 working days.
Next, foreigners can’t directly apply for the Tibet Travel Permit, but through a Tibet travel agency, which will help with your tour service packages: ground transportation, guide services, hotel reservations, etc.
Last but not least, you will be asked to show a valid Tibet Travel Permit either at the railway station or at the airport before entering Tibet. The Tibet Tourism Bureau will issue a paper permit to your travel agency, which will deliver the permit to you in turn. You have to take it with you during the whole journey.
