Tibet Winter Tour FAQs & Travel Tips
-
1. Is Tibet accessible in winter?
Yes, Tibet is accessible in the winter months from November to February. Most major attractions in Tibet, like Lhasa, Shigatse, Yamdrok Lake, and Everest Base Camp can be visited year-round. The remote Ngari area, including Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, is not accessible in winter. Also, the road to Namtso Lake through the high mountain passes often be closed due to heavy snow. You may get a rare chance to visit Namtso Lake in the winter season.
-
2. Why visit Tibet in winter?
A Tibet tour in winter is actually a hidden blessing for our tourists, esp. for budget travelers. Not only can you benefit from year-low flight and Tibet train tickets and discounted hotels but also enjoy the most intense religious atmosphere and diverse Tibetan festivals one after another. With the highest visibility in the air, and least-touristy attractions, you can explore Lhasa and its surroundings to your heart’s content. Some of the major attractions, including the Potala Palace, are also free to visit.
-
3. Is there snowfall in Tibet in winter?
In some mountain areas, like Mount Kailash and Mount Everest, the snowfall will start at the end of October, and sometimes it will also snow in April. However, in urban areas such as Lhasa and Shigatse, the snow usually falls from December to March.
If you encounter snow during your Tibet winter tour, you'll be fortunate to experience the unique tranquility of the snowy landscape of the Tibetan Plateau.
-
4. How to choose the right month for a Tibet winter tour?
As winter starts to take its stranglehold on the region, many areas of Tibet start to see snow, and some have even had it fall in late October. The tail end of the year is the perfect time to spend visiting the many temples and monasteries in Tibet and experiencing the uniquely cultural religious practices of Tibetan Buddhism. November, one of the few times without any rain at all, is also good for Mount Everest viewing, and despite it being a little chilly, the air is bright and clear, and the mountain shows its true majesty.
In December, some of the more westerly areas of Tibet get covered in snow, and often become impassible until the freeze thaws out in March. Temperatures in November and December can get as low as zero degrees during the day, and minus fifteen degrees at night. However, the latitude of Tibet is still low (only 29o North), so the sun can still be strong and warm on the skin.
January and February are in the middle of the winter season (end of October to February) in Tibet. It’s a time most people normally would not take as a perfect time to visit Tibet. Much of the blame goes to its bitter cold temperature and the temporary unavailability of certain attractions. However, such a preconception is not that accurate. The coldest areas are in the remote areas of northern and western Tibet. Lhasa and its surroundings and Shigaste City are perfect for travel, with temperatures staying at around 10°C to -8°C.
-
5. What should I pack for a winter trip in Tibet?
The daytime temperature in Lhasa can be quite pleasant in the sun, typically ranging from -5°C to 10°C (23°F to 50°F). You need to pack warm clothing, including a down jacket, gloves, and thermal underwear. As the air is dry in winter, you should also bring some moisturizing cream and lip balm with you. And don’t forget that sunglasses and sunscreen are also essential due to the high altitude and strong sunlight.
-
6. Is it safe to travel to Tibet in winter?
Yes, it is! Just be prepared for cold weather and potential altitude sickness. Catching a cold on the plateau can be dangerous in the Tibet Plateau, potentially leading to acute pulmonary edema. However, as long as you keep yourself warm, there should be no problems with your daily sightseeing.
Altitude sickness is also a normal reaction of the human body when going from a low altitude to a high altitude. It usually takes one to two days to adapt to the altitude in Lhasa. Relaxing and not being too nervous can also help relieve the discomfort caused by altitude sickness.
-
7. Are there any festivals or special events in Tibet during winter?
Tibetan New Year, also known as Losar, is the most important festival in winter Tibet. The Tibetan New Year celebration, based on the Tibetan Calendar, generally starts on December 29th and spans a two-week period. On the solar calendar, it often falls in late winter months, like January or February.
The Butter Lamp Festival is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist celebration honoring the legacy of Tsongkhapa. On this day, thousands of butter lamps are lit, symbolizing enlightenment and wisdom.
