Tibet's air quality greatly improved in 2011

Series of  measures  has been taken in SW. China's Tibet Autonomous Region to keep its high air quality and the excellent rate reached over 95% in 2011, according to Tibet's Department of Environmental Protection.

To reduce sandstorms, Tibet has intensified afforestation in recent years. It completed a total of 46, 666.67 hectares of afforestation in 2011 and it plans to afforest another 67, 866.67 hectares in 2012.

The industrial pollution is one of the main factors damaging air quality. In order to protect the blue sky, Tibet has always adhered to the principle of prudent development of industry,  prohibited industries with heavy pollution and high energy consumption, and prevented projects that would cause environmental pollution from entering into Tibet.

It has invested more than 80 billion yuan to manage the key industrial pollution sources. As a result, the emission of main pollutants has been reduced to met the national standard.

The wide use of pollution-free energy in Tibet also ensures the air quality. In recent years, Tibet has actively promoted the use of clean energy such as hydroenergy, geothermal resources, solar energy and wind energy.

In addition, Tibet has also increased the protection of ecological environment. So far, Tibet has 47 nature reserves, with protected areas covering 413,700 kilometers, which accounts for 34.47 percent of the region's area, ranking first in China.
