Musical on Han-Tibetan Marriage to Be Staged in Beijing

A musical depicting a significant marriage between a Han princess and a Tibetan king back in the 7th century, will be staged in Beijing from May 18 to 22.

The 150-minute musical titled Princess Wencheng includes 16 scenes in two acts, telling stories about Princess Wencheng in China's Tang Dynasty, lasting from 618-907 A.D., and her marriage with Sontzen Gampo, king of Tubo Kingdom in ancient Tibet, over 1, 300 years ago.

The large-scaled musical, produced by Malaysian elites in music, drama and dance circles, will offer audiences in Beijing a visual and aural feast.

In the musical, grand scenes are designed to imitate the peak era of the Tang Dynasty and the unique splendor on Tibetan Plateau.

Also, over 200 suits of Tang and Tibetan costumes are used to show the historical event vividly.

He Linghui, director of the musical, took to the creation of the play after a trip to Tibet in 2007, who intended to interpret the experience of Princess Wencheng from a female perspective.

The marriage of Princess Wencheng promoted the economic and cultural progress in ancient Tibet and strengthened the Han-Tibetan ties.

The princess dedicated almost all her life in developing Tibet and bringing advanced Chinese culture to Tibet, who has been admired by generations of Tibetans.

Various art forms have been used to commemorate the great historical figure at home and abroad, especially in Tibet.
