The Tashilhunpo Festival 2013 will fall on June 21 in solar calendar. The Tashilhunpo Buddha-unfolding Festival was created by the first Dalai Gengdu Zhuma some 500 years ago. The festival lasts for three days. Different portraits of Buddha are exhibited each day. They are hand-embroidered on silk or satin.
Buddha Amitabha (infinite light) would be exhibited on the first day of Buddha Exhibition Festival of Tashilhunpo Monastery. This exhibition aims to remind people to cherish the memory of the past.
Sakyamuni would be exhibited on the second day of Buddha Exhibition Festival of Tashilhunpo Monastery. The statue of Sakyamuni which would be exhibited was manufactured by the Ninth Panchen Lama. This exhibition aims to ask people to pray for a life with happiness.
Maitreya (the future Buddha) would be exhibited on the third day of Buddha Exhibition Festival of Tashilhunpo Monastery. This exhibition aims to encourage people to hold expectations for the future.
The Buddha-unfolding Festival is an important religious activity at
Tashilunpo Monastery for scripture chanting, prayer for rain and also a joyous festival for masses in rear Tibet. The Tashilhunpo Festival makes the Tashilunpo monastery becomes the scene of three-day festival. A huge thangkha is unveiled and cham dances are performed.
