It is said that Tibet is expected to reopen to foreign tourists in October, 2012 after a possible long closure since June 2012 caused by the self-immolation in Lhasa. But there is still no offical announcement from Tibet Tourism Bureau that Tibet is closed in June or will reopen in 2012.
Tibet is known as one of top travel destinations in whole Asia, the mystical Buddhist kingdom holds a special imagination among the worldwide travelers. But since March of 2008,
Tibet has become a politically sensitive place. A unique policy is implemented that all the foreign visitors who travel Tibet should obtain
Tibet permit from Tibet tourism bureau through a local travel agency. Foreigners were banned to travel Tibet in the past 4 years during a certain sensitive periods, such as important Chinese National events.
Unlike previous years, this year Tibet was closed from mid Feb to April due to some political upheaval in some area. And now Tibet is closed again in June 2012 due to the self-immolation in front of Jokhang temple during Saga Dawa Festival, a religious festival, during which a lot of pilgrims flock into Lhasa.
The reopening time is not clear and not optimistic. We only heard that Tibet will reopen to foreign travelers in October of 2012.
Tibet travel org is committed to provide the firsthand information on the reopening time of Tibet in 2012 to worldwide travelers and help them to arrange Tibet permits once Tibet Tourism Bureau begins to issue Tibet permits again.
