Sera Bengqin Festival is a grand religious festival held in Sera Monastery on Dec. 27 in Tibetan Calendar. The Sera sees millions of worshippers on Sera Bengqin Festival.
The Sera Bengqin Festival fell on Feb. 7 in 2013. The Tibetan people and Buddhist followers converged in the Sera Monastery in Lhasa yesterday, to celebrate the traditional Sera Bengqin Festival. During the celebration, worshipers were touched on the head by the Vajra Pestle, a sacred instrument in Buddhism, as they believe it would bring good fortune and ward off disasters.
The Sera Bengqin Festival is a traditional religious event and it is annually hold four days before Losar Festival or Tibetan New Year in the Sera Monastery in the northern suburb of Lhasa (Lhasa is the capital city of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region).
On the festival, a Dorje Pestle is carried to the Potala Palace. The Dalai Lama prays to the Buddha to confer strength and then he blesses the pestle. Tibetans live this festival with so much faith and joy. As a tradition, the worshipers shall be touched on the head by the Vajra Pestle which is the treasure of the Sera Monastery. The Vajra Pestle was originally a weapon from India and it was introduced as a Tibetan Buddist ritual instrument in the late 15th century.
