It is very interesting that the Tibetan farmers would celebrate the extra new year before the real new years of the Tibetan lunar calendar. This year, the Tibetan Farmers’ New Year was celebrated in Shigatse on Jan. 12.

The Tibetan Famers’ New Year is also known as Gtsang New Year. It is held generally at the beginning of the first month according to the Gregorian calendar. It’s the end of the whole year’s hard work, when crops have been harvested and farmers are sharing the happiest moment. Gtsang New Year in Tibetan calendar is deduced from the Buddhism calendar, it’s also an old festival based on the husbandry activities.
Activities during the festival are closely related to the husbandry. Therefore, it is called Farmers’ New Year. With lives of peasants becoming better off, people celebrate this festival more and more ceremoniously.
During the Tibetan Famers’ New Year 2013, monks with different masks and instruments in the Sagya Monastery performed the spectacular ritual, attracting local residents in their traditional dress.
Now, Tibetan people throught Tibet are preparing another big event, the Tibetan New Year 2013 falling on Feb. 11, 2013. (Go to see hot
