Ruddy shelduck or tadorna ferruginea is one of the most common birds seen in Tibet in winter. The best place to watch ruddy shelduck is at Lhasa River in winter.

When winter comes, flocks of ruddy shelducks would fly to Lhasa for wintering. They seem to come because they consider Lhasa in winter to be a beautiful warm place!
That is not the association most people have with Tibet in winter, but they are right! Temperatures hardly drop below -15 °C at night, and in daytime the sun is usually burning with no clouds being seen for weeks at a time.
Except watching birds if you
travel to Tibet in winter, you can also experience all kinds of Tibetan festivals. Tibetan people would celebrate many festivals in winter, like Guthuk Festival, Tibetan New Year, Butter Lamb Festival, etc. Besides, winter is also the pilgrimage season for Tibetan pilgrims. You can witness flocks of pilgrims in front of Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. Some of them are from far away to visit this holiest temple in Lhasa.
