Built in 1437, Champa Ling is the first and largest Gelukpa monastery in Chamdo prefecture of eastern Tibet. Now, Tibet's Champa Ling Monastery is on renovation, as part of China's efforts to better protect cultural heritage in the autonomous region.
The scheme includes renovation of ancient architecture, water supply, drainage and firefighting facilities, which will cost 93.78 million yuan (14.99 million U.S. dollars), said Yungdrung Dawa, head of the prefecture cultural heritage protection administration.
The original appearance of the monastery will be kept as part of the project, which is expected to be completed in July, he said.
Sitting at the confluence of the Ngomchu River and the Zachu River, the Champa Ling Monastery was founded in 1444 by Sherab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, named after its Chanmpa Buddha worshiped there.
As the oldest and largest monastery of the Gelug Sect (or yellow sect) in east Kham, the whole building is featured with an unique Tibetan style with yards and halls standing around, making it a piece of classic architectural works. If you make a Kham Tibet tour, you can pay a visit to the Champa Ling Monastery.
