You may see some pictures on internet showing that Tibetan people are living in an extremely poor condition, but nowadays it is different. Many great changes of Tibetan people’s life in Lhasa are made under the support from government.
Walking on the streets of Thamar Village in Nachen Township, Chengguan District of Lhasa, one will feel surprised to find so many well-arranged Tibetan style buildings, fitness equipments and flowers.
From an impoverished village to a well-known properous town in Tibet, the Thamar Village has achieved a historical leapfrog development in recent years with vigorous investment of the regional government.
“In the past, we had to spend half an hour on the bumpy road to get a ride to the downtown for shopping. On rainy days, people wouldn’t go outside. Now, there is a bus to the downtown in less than five minutes. And we have also bought a car, which can take us anywhere,” said Penpa, a 68 year-old resident of the Thamar Village.
In the past, the Penpa families were all farmers, and the family income was very limited.
“At that time, the agricultural technology was not developed. What we had gained from the farming land could only meet with our basic living.
Since the farming lands in our village have been centralized and managed by the government, the villagers, mainly living on farming before have completely “liberated” from the land, and engaged in the tertiary industry.
“The village committee subleases the lands for rents, which does not change the ownership of our land. Thus, we can get money even we don’t work,” said Penpa.
Besides, many villagers, taking advantage of special rights granted to their status as farmers, purchase commodity houses and shops within the Thamar Village at the lowest price for renting and business. And the income channels for local residents have been expanded.
“My son is a driver, my daughter-in-law is a civil servant, and we have house rents every month. Our life is much better than before,” said Penpa.
“If it were not for the help of our Party and government, we could not live such a better life now,” Penpa added.
