80 years old man reached Everest peak on May 23, 2013

Content

If you ask who is the oldest man reaching the top of the Everest, you will get a new answer now. It is an 80 years old man reached the top of Everest on May 23, 2013.

On this Thursday, an 80-year-old Japanese man Yuichiro Miura became the oldest person to reach the top of Mt. Everest. Yuichiro Miura reached the top of Everest Thursday morning with his physician son Gota, mountaineering official Gyanendra Shrestha said from the base of Everest.

Miura's achievement eclipses that of a Nepali man who climbed Everest at age 76 in 2008. Yuichiro Miura also conquered the Everest peak when he was 70 and 75.

Miura conquered the mountain despite undergoing heart surgery in January for irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia, his fourth heart operation since 2007, according to his daughter. He also fractured his pelvis and left thigh bone in a 2009 skiing accident.

Miura became famous when he was a young man as a daredevil speed skier. He skied down Everest's South Col in 1970, using a parachute to brake his descent. The feat was captured in the Oscar-winning 1975 documentary, The Man Who Skied Down Everest. He has also skied down Mt. Fuji.

It wasn't until Miura was 70, however, that he first climbed all the way to the summit of Everest. When he summited again at 75, he claimed to be the only man to accomplish the feat twice in his 70s. After that, he said he was determined to climb again at age 80. Yes, he did it successfully.

April to early June is also the best time to visit Mt. Everest. For normal tourists, it is extremely dangerous to climb the Everest. But it is quite easy to get to the Tibet Everest Base Camp to get a close view of the world's highest peak even you are over 70 or 80. Tibet travel org has helped many seniors to travel to the highest point in their life. For example, in this May, an 82-year old American man travelled to the Tibet Everest Base Camp despite that he hobbled for the elderly. Tibet Travel Org also gave him special care during his trip.
