The Saga Dawa Festival in Tibet is celebrated in the whole fourth month in Tibetan calendar. The first day of Saga Dawa Festival 2013 falls on May 10, 2013.
Along the prescribed route, 3 paths in total, pilgrims take ritual walk with their praying wheels at Lingkor Road of Lhasa, on the morning of May 10.
Unlike previous years, an overhead bridge has come into use this year, providing a safer and more convenient path for local pilgrims and alleviating the traffic pressure during the Saga Dawa Festival.
The festival is celebrated for Shakyamuni’s birth, nirvana and enlightenment on April 15 in Tibetan calendar, according to legend.
At this time of year, Tibetans tend to carry out various celebrations and give some of their possessions to the poor for accumulated virtue.
Many pilgrims will also go to worship the holiest Mount Kailash in western Tibet during the Saga Dawa Festival. They will do a three-day Kailash kora around the holy mountain.
