The world’s famous Qinghai Lake is known as the paradise of birds, and also a must-see site for a tour from Xining to Lhasa. May and June is the best time to watch birds at Qinghai Lake.

Qinghai Lake is widely regarded at the most beautiful lake in China and one of the most popular summer resorts in China. It is located about 150km away from Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, and at an altitude of 3,200m. The average temperature at the Qinghai Lake during summer at daytime is around 15 Celsius.

There are many famous scenic spots at Qinghai Lake. Bird Island is one of the scenic spots at the Qinghai Lake and also the top among the eight bird reserves in China.

There are thousands of birds inhabit on the Bird Island which lies in the northwest corner of Qinghai Lake. It is a paradise of the reproduction of Asian birds. Every May and June, migratory birds fly from faraway mountains and deserts to breed here. It is quite a spectacle of thousands of birds flying over the sky, with their nests thickly dotted and colorful eggs interspersed all over the island. So May and June is the best time of bird watching at Qinghai Lake.

Why the birds love this island? Mostly because the physiognomy is flat and the climate is mild. Besides, it is close to the water, which produces rich float grasses and fishes. The environment here is also very quiet, so it is a natural space for the birds to reproduce and inhabit.

Tourists can take a sightseeing bus or rent a car from Xining to the Qinghai Lake. It is best to stay one night at the Qinghai Lake to enjoy its different scenery in a day.
