People have their Tibet travel know the unique beautiful environment in Tibet is also very weak. The Tibet Autonomous Regional government announced Thursday that it has issued a circular urging strengthened management of tourist destinations.

The circular came after a local tourism company attempted to run boat tour services on a well-known lake, provoking public concern over possible environmental damage.

The circular states that tourist resorts and attractions that damage environment will be punished in accordance with the law.

Relevant government departments should abide by the principle of sustainable development in developing tourists attractions and strengthen regulations and supervision regarding construction and operating procedures in scenic areas, the circular said.

Scenic area managers should strictly abide by environmental and cultural relic regulations, said Wang Songping, deputy director of the regional tourism bureau.

Scenic site operators must also respect local customs while enhancing protection of natural resources and heritage, Wang said.

"The next step is to launch inspections in scenic spots and make sure they are operating in accordance with local tourism regulations," Wang said.

A local tourism company stated in June that it would offer boat tours on Yamdrok Lake, provoking the wrath of environmental activists and Buddhists alike.

The local government has halted the offer and promised to punish those found responsible.
