A small township in Lhasa with abundant tourism resources

Known for the Rutog Hot Spring among farmers and herders in Tibet, Rutog is a small township in Lhasa with abundant tourism resources. Rutog Township is located at the foot of Mon La Mountain in Maldrogungkar County of Lhasa, 120 kilometers away from Lhasa along National Highway 318. Its abundant tourism has become a source of development for the local people. Its health benefits and abundant tourism resources attract investors.

In 2002 Rutog Hotspring Health Care Research Centre was established with a total investment of 40 million yuan.It provides hotspring, catering and accommodation service and thermal water and skin-care products.

Padma, manager of the centre, who came back to his hometown after graduating from Tibet University seven years ago says the total tourism revenue was more than one million yuan in 2010.

Despite convenient transportation, there used to be only two households nearby before Rutog hotspring was developed. However, thanks to the projects of housing and poverty alleviation relocation, more and more people chose to move there. After several years development now there are more than 80 households and 50 restaurants and stores in the area.

Except for the hotspring, peoples also enjoy the delicious diced yak beef in Rudog. Rinchen Sangmo, owner of a popular diced yak beef store, starts her business from a small restaurant and expands operation scale continuously along with the prosperity of hotspring economy. Now she is running two-floor restaurant and family hotel, annual income reaching more than 100 thousands yuan, and her family is now a well-off family in the region.

At the Mon La Pass, 20 kilometers east of Rudog hotspring, there are souvenir stores run by local people, selling yogurt, prayer flags.

In the Nian Village near the mountain pass, all of the 12 households have benefited from tourism, and their per capita income growth reached 8 thousand yuan in 2009.

Rutog can be listed as one of your tourist destinations in Tibet when you are travelling in Tibet, especially traveling to Lhasa from Chengdu by overland.
