Best Time to Visit Mount Kailash in 2023

Mount Kailash, the holy mountain in the eyes of Buddhism disciples, has been considered as the axis of the world by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bon. Every year thousands of Tibetan, Nepal, and Indian Buddhists travel from near and afar to take a pilgrimage journey around Mt Kailash known as “kora”, a clockwise pilgrimage around the mountain’s foot. Because it is considered holy and sacred, it could not be climbed by an earthly man in the heart of religious followers. It remains its mystery to outsiders and attracts tens of thousands of tourists to appreciate its beauty and religious myth every year. Altitude sickness

The Kailash kora is performed at a height of 5,000m with the highest point Dolma-la pass at 5630m, making it difficult for the most experienced mountain climbers.

If you suffer altitude sickness during the trek, please stop ascent immediately otherwise more serious problems would occur. The best remedy for the altitude sickness is descent to a lower altitude.

In case of this illness, you may rent or buy oxygen bottles from the hotels in Darchen. You could also prepare some anti-altitude sickness medicine such as Rhodiola rosea. And there are some ways to alleviate altitude sickness you could refer.

The duration of the kora trek

The duration of kora trek generally lasts for two days. An average man could finish the kora around Mt. Kailash within two or three days.

What to eat during trek

You’d better bring many fruits so you could guarantee one or two fruits intake every day. The first day’s trek you could meet tea house along the route, where you could drink buttered tea and replenish your energy. You could also warm yourself at a fire with your companions. You could eat noodle in Drirapuk Monastery.

The condition would be harsher in the second day’s kora trek. Our guides could prepare basic cookers and simple meals such as porridges and instant noodles. You could hire chef from us if you need them.

In fact, there are 7 to 8 stops along the kora route where you could have a rest and replenish your food supplies and find accommodation.

Accommodation

Most pilgrims performing Kora would choose their first day lodge at Drirapuk Monastery. The temple is seen as the place for food supply and accommodation. The bedding here is shabby and it provides two sorts of beds, the one that charges 50RMB per person and another 100RMB per person.

We suggest you bring your own sleeping bags. There is no electricity supply after dark and the monastery will generate electricity by their own generator.

Horse, yak and porter

We can help you hire the yaks with their caretakers to load your trekking gears. If you are tired in the trek, you could hire horse to ride. The price for the rent varies according to different seasons and the weight of your gears. A yak can carry two or three backpacks, depending on their weight.

Small groups of two or three people are more likely to end up with a horse than a yak, as single yaks are notoriously difficult to manage. The yaks could only amount to Drirapuk Monastery and cease to work there.

You should pay for the porter’s accommodation and meals on the way. Porters can be easily found at all the hotels in Darchen. The most effective way to get a porter is to tell your guide and he will find one for you.
