“Can you tell me when is the best time to visit Mount Kailash area in Tibet?”
This question is enquiried from our website reader and also in several forums: Tripadvisor, Quora , Lonely Planet and so on. As a Tibet local tour guide travelled to Ngari region several times one year, it is my pleasure to offer more Mt. Kailash trek tips to my followers.
Because Mount Kailash is located at the far west of tibet and the average altitude is about 4500m, the regions are covered by heavy snow and ice in winter (usually from November to next March), and even in the night of April and October, it is very likely to snow. Therefore, the best time to do the Mount Kailash Kora (Trek), a walk circling around the base of Mount Kailash, is from May to October when it is warmer.
In addition, Saga Dawa festival falls on the three days from 13th to 15th days of April in the Tibetan calendar. Saga Dawa Festival is one of the most influential religious in Tibet. Tibetan Buddhists believe that Sakyamuni was born, becoming Buddha and attained in April. For worshipping, Tibetan Buddhists walk on and recite scriptures around the outer part of Lhasa, forming a grand troop. At the place near Kailash, the old prayer flagpole is taken down and the new one is put up. Each prayer flagpole represents a prayer that someone wants fulfilled. The flags are let to fly in the air so as to increase the potential for answering.
