The power of belief witnessed at Jokhang Monastery

The Jokhang Monastery is not majestic-looking. It does not even stand out among the surrounding buildings. In my eyes, Tibetan in style as it is, it is not glamorous as I thought it would be, unparallel to its fame.

However, what is magical about it is when one stands on the square in front of the monastery, beholding those devout prayers prostrating on their chests and smelling the incense rising from the burners, one is bound to be overwhelmed to his soul.

I tick tow into the crowd of prayers to feel the religious ambient when a praying old lady caught my attention. She is so concentrated on her own business, chanting scriptures, putting her palms together while slowly lowering down her body until her four limbs completely melt onto the floor. It is obvious that she was taking it so seriously that she did not notice me who was standing right by her side taking pictures.

As I looked further, I could see wrinkles all over her face, a symbol of perseverance, as if they are using their own way to graphically tell me how this lady has been praying at the monastery day by day over the past decades.

Unfortunately, at the moment it was not time when bunches of prayers were gathering in front of Jokhang Monastery to do the praying. Even so, it was already mind-blowing, even for an atheist like me.

My friend told me her experience at the square on Tibetan religious festival in March. The place we stood on the square and even thirty meters wider was fully packed with spades of prayers who were kowtowing on their chests, the wooden pads they wore rubbing the stone slats on the floor, giving off a roaring sound, getting her goose bumps.

At the square, there is a post beset with human's teeth. It is said that those teeth were from prayers who died on the way to the Jokhang Monastery. In order to fulfill their wish to pray at the monastery, their teeth were pulled out and embed onto the post posthumous.
