Saga Dawa Festival falls on the 4th month of the Tibetan calendar. Sakyamuni, the month lord, was born at Lunbini on the 7th day of the Saga Dawa Month of the iron monkey year of Tibetan lunar calendar. The Lord Buddha (Sakyamuni) facing east meditated on straw under a giant bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya in India. Subdued evil ghosts at night fall and acquired enlightenment in dawn on the 15th day of Saga Dawa month, Lord Buddha pari passu nirvana in Kathinagar city in India.

Tibetan folk consider this month as a great creator, and so massive people and monk will hold religious activities. To follow this tradition, most people do not mention monks and are pious to prayer a half month ahead of Saga Dawa. In Jokhang Temple and all the religions part, thousands of offering are respectively put and all Buddha sculpture are coated with gold powder and offered butter lamps in the morning of the 15th day. The first thing for pilgrims to do is to present khada and fill lamp oil to Buddha. Pilgrims practice prayer during the way while burning incense on the mani stones passed by. They follow traditions and given donation to beggars in this festival.
