Tibet to build world-class tourist destination
Tibet is going to build world-class highland eco-tourist destination with Tibetan cultural characteristics to lay foundation to the world tourist destination during the period of the 12th "five-year plan" (2011-2015), source from the Tibet Tourism Bureau.
Tourism has become one of the pillar industries in Tibet. In recent years, with the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet railway and flights to its Nyingchi, Ngari and Shigatse prefecure, Tibet's tourism industry enters a new period of development. During the "Eleventh Five-Year" period, Tibet received a total of 21.25 million domestic and foreign tourists, with an average annual growth of 30.6%; and the total tourism income is 22.62 billion yuan (about 3.58 billion dollars), with an average annual growth of 29.8%.
According to Tibet Tourism Bureau, during the "12th Five-Year plan" period, Tibet would fully carry out the double-growth plan in the tourism industry: by the end of 2015, Tibet is going to receive 15 million tourists; tourist revenue reaches 18 billion yuan (about 2.85 billion yuan); the total tourism revenue accounts for over 20% of the region's GDP; tourist employees in tourism reach 300,000; and the fixed assets exceed 25 billion yuan (about 3.95 billion dollars).
During the five years, Tibet would vigorously develop the mass tourism, focus on creating high-end tourist products, stress on the development of tourism with high quality. To 2015, Tibet would become a world tourist destination with unique tourist attraction and capacity to meet various needs of domestic and foreign tourists.
