Temporary Train from Xining to Lhasa is off duty

Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company decided to start a temporary train from Xining to Lhasa in May 2012 so as to meet the touring needs of both domestic and international visitors for sightseeing the beauty of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau scenery alongside the Qinghai-Tibet railway. But now the temperary train from Xining to Lhasa is off duty and the daily train from Xining to Lhasa is restored.

As the world's highest and longest plateau railway, Qinghai-Tibet railway is regarded as the Golden Touring Line. Tourists can view the majestic Qinghai Lake, magnificent Kunlun Mountain and North Tibet Grassland etc. alongside the railway.

The new Lhasa-bound train (L9815/6) used to be available for travellers at Xining West Station during the peak season. The train departs from Xining West Station at 19:22 every other day and arrives in Lhasa the next day at 18:30; the return journey departs Lhasa at 12:05 and arrives back in Xining at 10:37 the next day. The return trip from Lhasa to Xining – the L9816 – departs once at a day and stops at Naqu Railway Station and Golmud Station before arriving back in Xining.

But the temporary passenger train L9815 was off duty from June. 8. From June 10, another temporary train L9816 also stopped its service. Meanwhile, the administration decided to restore the operation of the passenger train K9811/2, whose route is from Xining West to Lhasa.

The daily opening line of restored K9811/2 started from June 8 with three stops at Delingha, Golmud and Naqu respectively before arriving in Lhasa. The departure time of K9811 from Xining West Station is 22:00 and the arrival time at Lhasa Station is 21:40, the next day. The departure time of K9812 from Lhasa Station is 17:00 and the arrival time at Xining West is 16:00, the next day.

If you cannot get a ticket of the train to Lhasa from Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou during the peak tourism season of Tibet, it is advisable to take a train or flight to Xining and then take the train to Lhasa from Xining.
