Rongwu Monastery in Amdo Tibetan Area

Rongwu Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist Temple in Amdo Tibetan Area and named after Rongwo River upon which the monastery is built. The Rongwu Monastery, also known as Lower Wutun Monastery, is situated at the southwestern end of Longwu town, Tongren County, Qinghai Province, about 186km away from Xining, capital of Qinghai. As one of the oldest and largest Gelupa monasteries in Amdo Tibetan Area, the Rongmu Monastery was initially established as a three temple site in 1341 in by Rongwu Samten Rinpoche. The first temple built was the Temple of 3 Buddhas and then the Golden Temple and other temples. 
 
The Longwu Monastery faces the east. It has grand architecture scale, stately model, and luxurious decoration. In the temple, there are articles of fine arts and valuable cultural relics. The Rongwu Monastery has several dozen halls and thousands of monk cells. The grand hall has a number of spectacular statues of Shakyamuni and others including an 11-meter gilded statue of the founder, Tsongkapa (Zongkaba) on a stand 26 meters in circumference. It is the birthplace of Anduo Tibetan plays with performances being held at various times in each season.

There are 18 temples under the domination of Longwu Temple, Nianduhu Temple, Guomeri Temple, Wutun Temple, and etc. The main Buddhist rituals are prayer meeting from Jan. 13-18 according to lunar calendar, Nidan prayer meeting in Mar., Jiangfan festival in Sept. ,and Wugong festival in Oct. ,and etc. In 1996, Longwu Temple is listed as key cultural site under state protection. It attracts many tourists, professionals, and scholars with its long history and abundant cultural relics. 
 
As Tibet temporarily stops issuing Tibet permit to foreign tourists from Feb. to Mar., 2013, tourists are recommended to do an Amdo Tibet Tour or a Kham Tibet Tour instead of their booked Tibet tours during these two months.
