World’s famous tourist sites in Tibet

With the development of Tibet’s tourism and the improvement of Tibet’s tourist facilities, Tibet attracts more and more travelers from all over the world. There are so many sights to visit in Tibet. But with only several days there, do not miss the world’s famous tourist sites in Tibet.

The Potala Palace

Potala

When talking about travelling to Tibet, I believe the Potala Palace is the first tourist site coming into the mind of most travelers. The Potala Palace was first constructed in the 7th century, but was almost totally destroyed by fire in a thunder-storm. During the rule of the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century, large-scale reconstruction began on the original site.

The present Potala Palace covers 41 hectares of land and consists chiefly of the 13-storeyed, 117-meter-tall red and white palaces, towering over the city of Lhasa from a mountain top. Its imposing scale and unique style make it the symbol of Tibet. As the official residence of the Dalai Lamas, the Potala Palace was representative of the region’s former theocracy. Aside from that, it is also the site of an art museum and a treasure house of historical documents. As the world's largest and most intact ancient castle-style complex located on the highest altitude, the Potala Palace was inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994

Lake Namtso

Namtso

Located at an elevation over 4,700 meters above sea level, the Namtso Lake is known as “Heavenly Lake” in Tibetan. It is the top one of the three holy lakes in Tibet. It covers an area of 1,920 square kilometers, being 700 kilometers from east to west and 30 kilometers from south to north. There are three islands in the lake which are habitats of wild ducks in late spring and early summer. The vast shore of the lake is a natural pasture with glossy grass and plenty water. The sunrise and sunset make the Namtso Lake more charming.

Mt. Everest

Everest

As the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest is known by people all over the world. Mount Everest was formed about 60 million years ago. It's believed that Mt. Everest was formed by two tectonic plates of Asia and India, which collided millions of years ago and created the mountain range known as the Himalayas. The Tibetans in the North call Everest "Qomolungma" or "Goddess, Mother of the World". In Nepal, it is named "Sagarmatha" or "the Goddess of the Sky''.

The Everest Base Camp in Tibet is the best place to view the Mt. Everest. Tourists can make a Lhasa to EBC Tour or an EBC tour from Kathmandu.
