Famous Tibetan Carpet is manufactured in Gyantse

Located at 4,040 meters above sea level, Gyantse is the fourth largest city in Tibet. In fact it is a little traditional Tibetan town known as the "Hero City" because of the Gyantse Fort built for 500 soldiers died in a war against British invaders. Famous Tibetan Carpet is also manufactured in Gyantse. Travellers can drop a visit to the carpet factory when travelling from Lhasa to Kathmandu or Everest Base Camp.

In Gyantse, the Tibetan carpet with a history of more than 2000 years is the treasure of traditional Tibetan handicrafts. From a life necessity to a universally acknowledged handicraft, the Tibetan carpet has realized its thriving development with its unique weaving techniques and cultural symbols in Gyantse County.

On the eastern side of Gyantse, the Tibetan Carpet Factory is producing traditional Tsang rugs. Carding, spinning and dyeing of wool are done beforehand. Thanks to the modern technology, productivity has been raised greatly. Gyantse County Rug Factory justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. The refreshing milieu, best geographical environment and the best quality of life around the Gyantse County Rug Factory offers the most pleasant site for tourists to enjoy their vacations. Its beauty and place in history captivates, and many visitors return again and again.

Gyantse is also notable for its magnificent tiered Kumbum of the Palcho Monastery. The Kumbum was commissioned by a Gyantse prince in 1427 and was an important centre of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. This religious structure contains 77 chapels in its six floors, and is illustrated with over 10,000 murals, many showing a strong Nepali influence and having survived pretty well intact. They are the last of this type in Tibet. Many of the restored clay statues are of less artistry than the destroyed originals-but they are still spectacular.
