A thangka is a painting on silk with embroidery, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala of some sort. Tsurphu Monastery is the most important monastery of the Karma Kagyu lineage, which is probably the largest and certainly the most widely practiced lineage within the Kagyu School, one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Tsurphu Monastery is the official home of the Karmapa Lama, the third ranking priest in Buddhist hierarchy, and he still lived there until he left over the Himalayas to India in February of this year, 2000.
