In Tibet,
Prayer Stones serve the important religious purposes. Buddhists make these prayer stones not only for themselves, but for all sentient being.
Usually, the stones are carved for faithful Tibetan prayers to gain positive conditions, such as a long life, health and success; and to overcome negativities and obstacles for the deceased. The stones are carved with sutras or mantras, or sometimes images of deities. The carved prayer stones are taken to the sacred places, where they accumulate into huge piles which is named now Mani Pile. During your Tibet tour, you will see many different types of prayer stones. They may be carved on small rocks which are earily transported, on large boulder, or even on the faces of cliffs with the images of animals. After carving, the letters are often painted in five colors: red, blue, white, yellow and green. The colors that are chosen are prescribes by the mantra that is written. These artworks are the artistic language of Tibetan culture, which provides valuable materials for us to dig more about the original history and culture of Tibet.
