Overview

Only a mere three hours driving away from Lhasa, a breathtaking Lake stands as an epitome of heavenly beauty. This ethereal expanse has become the destination of choice for the annual International Cycling Race around Yamdrok Lake, a spectacle that draws enthusiasts from all corners to its shores. With a lakeshore stretching across a grand 250 kilometers, the majority of our journey will embrace the turquoise blue of the lake's edge, a path that unfurls through pastures kissed by the sun and blue water, Tibetan villages steeped in tradition, and the stately presence of yaks and sheep. The wilderness also thrives along the lake's shore, where wild creatures find their haven.

Having spent two days in Lhasa, enjoying world-renowned heritage sites and monasteries at the world's highest city, we start a three-day circumnavigated cycling of Yumdrotso Lake. This is a journey graced by the companionship of islands, pure blue waters, and snow-clad peaks – a journey that takes us through a realm of unparalleled beauty.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa

Your tour guide will pick you up at Lhasa airport/train station. Transfer to the Hotel by car. After arriving in Lhasa, you can take a rest and get acclimatized to high altitude. If you feel to go out, then you can go to the Potala Square, where you will enjoy the fountain with different colors and get amazing photos of the Potala and around.

Day 2: Lhasa City, Potala Place and Johkang Temple

Today's tour will first bring you to the Potala Palace which is the winter palace of the Dalai lama. It was put to use since the 7th Century by the 33rd great king of Tibet. In the afternoon, you will head to Jokhang temple which was founded by the 33rd great king of Tibet in the 7th century. Inside you can see the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve. Outside, you can see pilgrims making prostrating in front of Jokhang Temple. Around the temple is Barkhor street, where you can walk with pilgrims and locals.

Day 3: Lhasa City, Sera Monastery, prepare for bike ride

In the morning, you are going to do preparation for the long trip, to try the fixed bikes, and pack your belongings.

In the afternoon, you will visit Sera Monastery, to see the Monks debating at around 3-5 in the afternoon. In addition, you can tour the Tibetan religious scripture printing house. Inside the monastery, you can see three sand Mandalas and the colorful Rock Painting of Buddha.

Day 4: Lhasa- Chushur –Khanbala Pass –Thamalung Village (120km, 3 hours driving)

Today, we take our bikes and facilities to the foot of Khanbala Pass, as well as the first village on the shore of Yamdrotso Lake. With elevation of 4,441m, we need to acclimatize the altitude and doing some fitness excises to ensure our next 3 days cycling journey can be do successfully. At the top of Khanbala Pass, you will have the first glimpse of magic Yamdrotso Lake, to see its colorful water under the sunshine.

Day 5: Thamalung village – View Platform – Ritho Monastery – Zhayu Village (Ride 60km, 7 hrs)

The first day's cycling unfolds gently, as most of the roads follow the contours of the lakeshore. Our destination, the picturesque Zhayu Village, rests serenely by the lakeside. Along this path, nature's splendor unfurls in every direction – the gleaming interplay of lake and mountain, the idyllic allure of rustic villages, and the emergence of wild creatures from their sanctuaries.

Day 6: Zhayu Village – Jangtha Island – Gatok Monstery – Rila Island – Tebra Village(Ride 78km, 8 hrs)

The starting point of the second day of cycling around the lake is Zhayu Village, and the destination is Tebra Village. This ride include may wonderful scenery, not only has a vast and turquoise blue lake, but also enjoys the fun of grasslands, wetland scenery and wild animals along the way. Today's riding is more difficult than the first day with the most climbs and descents and several kilometers gravel and bumpy mountain roads that require your good endurance. On the way, we will pay a visit to the Rila Temple, known as the loneliest temple in the world with a small chapel on the top of a beautiful island where only a few monks living in there. And we will also pass through several excellent locations to enjoy the scenery of the lake.

Day 7: Tebra Village – Docha Village – Thoblang Monastery - Nangartse (Ride 72km, 8 hrs)

On the third day of our lakeside cycling expedition, we will once again pass through sevel villages and the grand Thoblang Monastery, the largest temple along the shores of Yumdrotso Lake. From this vantage point, we'll be treated to a closer view of the snow-capped mountains that grace the lakeshore – a truly awe-inspiring sight. As we depart from the lakeside, our journey continues through tranquil farmlands, leading us to the main road, where we'll conclude today's adventure in Nangartse.

Day 8: Nangartse to Karola Glacier, drive back to Lhasa (Ride 30km, 2 hours, driving 4 hrs.)

On this day, you need to climb over the Karola Glacier at 5,110 meters with a 30km cycling. While ending the riding along the shore of Lake, the following will be several sections of steep slopes of several kilometers with up and down. Kharola Glacier originates at Mt. Noijin Kangsang (7,191m), which is one of the four holy mountains of Tibet, we can reach very near to the ice togue. After reaching the Kharola, we will go back to Lhasa by car.

Day 9: Lhasa departure

We must say congratulations to you that you have completely made this wonderful job, we will give you a certificate hand-writing by our tour guide who witness this achievement in Himalaya.

Transfer Service between Hotels and Airport/ Train Station

Lhasa Gongar International Airport is about 70km from the downtown, and it takes about 1.5 hours for a car transfer between airport and hotel. Considering the distance and language barrier, Tibet Vista provides free transfer service from/to airport.

Upon your arrival at airport, our Tibetan local pick-up guide will hold a board with your name and wait for you at the exit, he will escort you to the transfer car, accompany you to the hotel, and assist you with hotel check-in. When tour ends, our guide will pick you up at hotel and escort you to the airport.

Airport Pick-up Schedules: Pick up tourists at 10:00 am; 13:30 pm; 17:00 pm

Airport Drop-off Schedules: Pick up tourists at 06:30 am; 08:00 am; 12:00 pm

If your flight time is not within our transfer schedule, feel free to contact our travel consultant, we will do our best to arrange the most proper transfer service for you.

Besides the airport transfer, Tibet Vista also provides unlimited free transfer between hotel and Lhasa Railway Station according to your arrival/departure time.
