9 Days Royal Trek in Pokhara

(NT-09RTP) Kathmandu - Pokhara - Kalikasthan - Syaklung - Chisapani - Pokhara - Kathmandu

Overview

One of the shorter treks through the shrubs and brush of the Annapurna foothills, the Royal Trek gets its name from Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, who trekked the route in the early 1980s. An awe-inspiring trek that gives opportunities to explore the diverse cultures of the area as well as the landscapes and scenery, the trail begins in Pokhara, and passes through several local Gurung hamlets along the route. With stunning views of the Annapurna Range and the sacred Mount Machhapuchhre, the trip ends at the crystal clear Lake Begnas.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu [1300 m/4264 ft]

When you arrive at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, your guide will be expecting you at the airport and bring you a nice ride to your hotel, where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing, or take in the local sights.

Stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation

In the morning, you will start your tour of the spiritual and historic sites of the Kathmandu Valley, several of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The morning tour includes the sites of the ancient Durbar Royal Square, in the city itself, as well as the Hindu Pashupatinath Temple, the monkey temple known as Swayambhunath, and the Buddha Nath, the Buddhist shrine that is among the world’s largest stupas.

In the afternoon, you will have a discussion and trek preparation meeting with your trekking guide and the other team members of the support team. After the meeting, the rest of the day is yours to look around the city or get in some shopping.

Stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 3: Drive Pokhara [823m/2,700ft]: 6-7 hrs drive

In the morning you will take the long drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, which lies around 205 kilometers to the west of the Nepali capital. A pleasant drive of around 5-7 hours, the road passes through lush green mountainsides, and through small hamlets, reaching the lakeside city of Pokhara in the early afternoon. The rest of the day is yours to explore the lakes, tour around the city, or get in some trout fishing or boating on the stunning Lake Phewa.

Stay overnight in Pokhara.

Day 4: Pokhara to Kalikasthan [1,370m/4,496ft]: 1 hr drive, 4-5 hrs trek

After a good local breakfast, you will drive to the village of Bijayapur Khola, where the trek starts, and the first hour will be a relaxing walk through rice fields and across the river, where the trail starts its ascent to Kalikasthan. The climb is not overly steep, but is long, and you will stop for a packed lunch half way up. On arriving in Kalikasthan, you will get to rest, and the rest of the day is yours to explore the village and surroundings.

Stay overnight in a Kalikasthan guesthouse.

Day 5: Kalikasthan to Syaklung [1,730m/5,675ft]:5-6 hrs

Today’s trek is a walk through several local villages of the Gurung people of Nepal, before heading up to the ridge of the nearby mountain, which has good views of the Annapurna Range, as well as Lamjung Himal. The trek to the ridge takes you through a vast rhododendron forest, and the small village of Syaklung lies at the furthest end of the mountain ridge.

Stay overnight in a Syaklung guesthouse.

Day 6: Syaklung to Chisapani [1550m/5,084ft]: 5-6 hrs

As the dawn comes, you will prepare for the day’s hike through forests of rhododendron and sal trees. The route takes you down into a small valley 400 meters below the forest, and then up the other side, a climb of around 600 meters to the village of Chisapani. One of the best locations to get a good view of the entire Himalayan panorama, it is the first point from where you can see Mount Dhaulagiri, which lies to the west of the Annapurna Range.

Stay overnight in a Chisapani guesthouse.

Day 7: Chisapani to Pokhara

Your last day of trekking sees you taking a walk downhill to the small village of Rupatal, before climbing up another 200 meters in altitude to Sundare Danda. From there, it is a 15-minute walk down to the lake at Begnas Tal, where you can enjoy a trip on the local boats. A car will then take you back to Pokhara for the night.

Stay overnight in Pokhara.

Day 8: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu: 6-7 hrs drive

Early in the morning, you will take the long drive back to Kathmandu, passing through the scenic landscape of central Nepal.
