Latest Updates on the Shigatse Earthquake in Tibet: Feeling the Pain of Our Losses
Till now, the Shigatse Dingri Earthquake has caused 126 deaths, 188 injuries, and 3,612 houses collapsed. We mourn every life lost and feel the pain of every home destroyed. But the support pouring in from all corners of the world gives us the strength to rebuild and the hope to look toward the future.
At present, 2,308 people have been evacuated from Dingri County and 187 resettlement sites have been set up, with 46,500 people resettled. All 484 tourists in Dingri County have returned safely to downtown Shigatse.
More and more rescue forces are gathering in Dingri, and we will continue to follow the situation closely.

How the Shigatse Earthquake is Impacting Tibetan Tourism Right Now?
The epicenter of the Dingri earthquake is about 65 kilometers to Mount Everest, 164 kilometers to Shigatse, and 379 kilometers to Lhasa.
Recently, for the safety of tourists and to leave a passage for the rescue team, the Everest Base Camp in Tibet has been temporarily closed, and the road to Mount Everest is also closed for rescue use only. It is expected that the road to Mount Everest could reopen in two weeks, on January 23. Until then, the trip to Everest Base Camp and Lhasa Kathmandu overland tours will not be available.
However, trips to other regions of Tibet are not affected by the Shigatse earthquake. You can still explore the iconic landmarks in the holy city of Lhasa, enjoy the stunning beauty of nearby Yamdrok Lake, and visit most attractions in Tibet.
Everest Base Camp is not accessible until the Everest National Nature Preserve reopens.
Is it Still Possible to Book a Tibet Tour? Should My Trip Be Postponed?
If you’re planning an Everest Base Camp tour in Tibet or an overland trip between Lhasa and Kathmandu in January 2025, please postpone your trip or change your itinerary, as the Everest Scenic Area is temporarily closed. However, Tibet tours to other regions, like Lhasa and Nyingchi, are not affected by the Shigatse Earthquake. You can still explore most parts of Tibet this January.
If you’re planning to visit Tibet after February 2025, you can book your Tibet tour with no worries. As the road to Mount Everest will definitely reopen by then, you can visit Everest Base Camp in Tibet or take the Tibet Nepal overland tour like before. And if you are unable to visit due to the Everest Base Camp closure, we at Tibet Vista will offer a full refund.
Due to the considerable distance from Shigatse to Mount Kailash, the road to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar has not been affected by the recent earthquake. Therefore, you can book your Mount Kailash tour in 2025 with confidence.
Your travel to Tibet in 2025 will be a great help to the local economic recovery. We will always put your safety first and plan a reasonable itinerary for you so that you can feel the charm of Tibet to the greatest extent and make your trip worthwhile.
The journey to Mount Kailash in 2025 will not be affected by the earthquake.
