Tibet Shigatse Earthquake: How Is the Reconstruction Progressing Today?

September 28, 2025 BY Lhakpa 0 Comment

On January 7, 2025, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Tingri County in Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The powerful quake led to 126 deaths, 188 injuries, and destroyed 3,612 houses.

Within just 30 minutes, local officials, rescue teams, and military officers immediately engaged in disaster relief efforts, saving lives and moving residents to safe shelters. Though the epicenter is around 80km away from Mt. Everest, for safety concerns, the Mount Everest tour was suspended until it reopened to global travelers on March 1, 2025.

So, eight months after the Tibet Shigatse earthquake, how is the reconstruction progressing? Has it affected Tibet travel or the Everest tours? Please join us to closely look at vibrant Shigatse, resilient local Tibetans, and booming Tibet tourism after the earthquake.

How Did the Shigatse Earthquake Affect the Local Community and Mt. Everest?

The epicenter of the January 2025 Tibet earthquake was in Cuoguo Town, Tingri County, Shigatse. When the strong quake hit the region, many nearby villages were badly damaged because most old houses here were made of stone and earth, which were not built to withstand such a powerful quake.

According to the statistics, in the earthquake-affected areas, 27,248 houses were damaged, including 3,612 that were completely destroyed. The tragic earthquake also caused 126 deaths and injured 188 people to varying degrees. Some areas suffered temporary power and communication outages, and a few roads were blocked by landslides or cracks, making it harder to deliver relief supplies.

However, shortly after the earthquake, rescue teams nationwide, including the military, firefighters, and medical personnel, arrived quickly with thousands of people and all necessary equipment. Everyone affected by the quake was quickly rescued and evacuated to safe areas. Many stayed in relief tents where food, water, bedding, and heating were well provided. Even with ongoing aftershocks, our local community’s spirits remain strong and united.

Since the epicenter is around 80 km away from Mount Everest, both the Mt. Everest and the Tibet Everest Base Camp were barely affected, though the strong tremor was felt.

Besides, the world’s highest peak itself remained stable. No avalanches, ice falls, or geological shifts were reported. Chinese scientists monitoring the area confirmed that Everest’s rugged terrain is resilient, and the quake caused no lasting hazards.

Meanwhile, fortunately, the Tibet earthquake occurred in January, the off-season (or Tibet winter tour) for travelers. A small number of visitors at the Everest Base Camp quickly sought shelter inside eco-buses and were completely safe.

How Is the Reconstruction Progress Going Nowadays?

Today, if you travel from Lhasa to Shigatse and happen to visit the earthquake-affected areas, you won’t see ruined villages anymore. Instead, you will be happy to find newly built towns rising from the ground and neighbors busy at work, full of hope and energy.

In mid-August, the first group of over 2,500 families successfully relocated to safe and comfortable new homes. And the second group soon followed in late August. The epicenter of Cuoguo town is now full of life and dotted with new Tibetan-style houses. By the end of October, all earthquake-affected families will be moving into their new houses.

Besides, now every new house is built with concrete and steel, strong enough to stay safe even in severe earthquakes. These are among the safest buildings in Shigatse. So, we can enjoy the peace of mind even if another earthquake occurs.

What’s more, life in these new homes is also much more comfortable. Each house has tap water, stable electricity, and internet. We Tibetans also get temporary living subsidies, warm bedding and winter clothing, and heating equipment from the government, which allows us to stay warm and secure. Roads, transportation, and communication networks have all been fully restored. In a nutshell, Shigatse is not just rebuilding, it’s thriving.

Is There Any Impact on Visiting Tibet?

No, the January Tibet Shigatse earthquake has little impact on Tibet tourism. The entire Tibet remains as beautiful and welcoming as ever.

From the holy city of Lhasa to the towering Mount Everest, all the main attractions are open and operating normally. Famous sites around Tingri County, like Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse City and the Gyantse Kumbum Stupa, were carefully checked and found safe. Even Sakya Monastery, which was briefly closed for safety checks, has reopened fully. In fact, in June 2025, Shigatse proudly hosted the 19th Everest Cultural Tourism Festival, showing that everything is back to normal.
