Lhasa to Namtso Lake Distance: How Far and How to Get There (Updated for 2026)

November 24, 2025 BY Master Kungga Dundruk 0 Comment

Located about 240 kilometers north of downtown Lhasa, Namtso Lake is a popular side-trip destination from Lhasa. It can be reached by car or train from the holy city.

As the largest lake in Tibet, it takes time to travel around Namtso Lake. For most tourists, Tashi Dor Island on the southern shore of Namtso Lake is the most famous site to visit. The Holy Elephant Gate on the northern shore of Namtso Lake is a less-traveled destination for a far distance. However, the wild landscapes attract more adventurers.

For planning a smooth travel from Lhasa to the holy Lake Namtso, we’ll explain how far they are and the best ways to get there.

How far is Namtso Lake from Lhasa? 234.4 km to the South Shore and 342 km to the North Shore

As the largest lake in Tibet, Namtso Lake covers an area of 1,900 to 1,940 square kilometers. It is equivalent to the size of two Hong Kongs or one and a half Londons.

For Namtso Lake tours, the major tourist areas are either the south shore or the north shore, each with distinct distances, road conditions, and travel time.

The distance from Lhasa City to the northern side of Namtso Lake, famous for the Tashi Dor Island, is 234.4 kilometers. It is the most popular part to visit for Namtso Lake tours.

The less-traveled Holy Gate of Elephant on the south shore of Namtso Lake is 342 kilometers from downtown Lhasa, making it a longer journey to reach.

If you are planning a journey to Namtso Lake, you should first decide which side of the holy lake you want to visit.

Lhasa to Namtso Lake South Shore by Car: Around 4 Hours to Tashi Dor Island

It takes around 3.5 to 4 hours to drive from Lhasa to Tashi Dor Island on the south shore of Namtso Lake.

Departing from Lhasa, you’ll follow the well-paved Qinghai-Tibet Highway (also known as the G109 National Highway) to Damxung. The 163-kilometer journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the vast grassland with yaks and sheep dotted and accompanied by the endless Nyenchen Tanglha mountains.

Then, you’ll drive another 15 kilometers from Damxung to the entrance of Namtso National Park and complete the last 50 kilometers to the south shore of Namtso Lake.

The road conditions from Lhasa to Tashi Dor Island are quite good with well-maintained asphalt roads. Just pay attention to the section across the Nagen La Pass. To cross the mountain pass at 5,190 meters above sea level, the mountain road is winding and steep. It requires careful driving to reach the Tashi Dor Island.

Lhasa to Namtso Lake North Shore by Car: Around 6 Hours to the Holy Elephant Gate

The Holy Elephant Gate on the north side of Namtso Lake is about 342 kilometers away from downtown Lhasa. The further distance takes more time to drive from Lhasa to the north shore, around 6 hours in total.

Following the Qinghai-Tibet Highway from Lhasa to Damxung, you need to drive another 125 kilometers from the entrance of Namtso National Park to the Holy Elephant Gate on the north shore.

In order to protect the ecological environment of the northern shore of Namtso Lake, the roads to the Holy Elephant Gate are not paved with asphalt. More sections are dirt and bumpy, rutted roads. You need to prepare for the poor road conditions, but the breathtaking landscapes along the way make the journey truly worthwhile.
