Galsang Flowers: The Symbol of Happiness in Tibet
As the city flower of Lhasa, Galsang means “happiness” in Tibetan. It refers to wildflowers with strong vitality on the Tibetan plateau. It represents Tibetans’ aspiration for a better life, which is an important symbol in Tibetan culture and could be seen everywhere during a Lhasa Tour.
Currently, there is no unified definition of the Galsang flower and all the nameless wildflowers can be called Galsang flowers. In Tibetan cultural life, they are considered the most tenacious wildflowers on the plateau. Grow at high altitudes, they are not afraid of the severe cold, and possess strong vitality and medicinal value and other economic benefits.
There are several types of flowers known as Galsang flowers, such as Cosmos bipinnatus, Callistephus chinensis, Potentilla fruticosa, and Aster souliei Franch. Among these flowers, Cosmos bipinnatus is the most commonly recognized species as Galsang flowers. It can be seen almost everywhere in Tibet every year from June to August.

Seasonal Highlights: When and Where to See Blooming Flowers in Tibet
Every year in spring and summer when various kinds of wildflowers bloom, the entire plateau is like a beautiful garden, attracting numerous tourists from home and abroad to see the stunning floral scenery in Tibet.
The peach blossom in Nyingchi is the most popular floral attraction in Tibet. Pink peach blossoms against the lush forests and snow-capped mountains make this place a wonderland. Based on altitude and region, the peach blossom in Nyingchi lasts from mid-March to mid-April.
The Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival is held every year to celebrate the grand scenery and promote Tibetan culture. During the festival, you can enjoy many activities such as vibrant Tibetan dance performances, wrestling competitions and sacred blessing ceremonies.
Additionally, from July to August, there are fields of rapeseed flowers on both sides of the road in places such as Shigatse and Linzhou. Bright yellow under the summer sun, the rapeseed flowers in full bloom paint a golden countryside landscape alongside villages and roads.

Local Tibetans are fond of growing flowers as a way to embrace nature and life. When the flowers they plant are in full bloom, many flower lovers are attracted. Tibetans also enjoy seeing the flowers they have carefully nurtured being appreciated by strangers.
One of the flowers they like to grow is the geranium which has vibrant flowers and scalloped leaves. Geraniums are very easy to grow and are usually white, pink, or red. Some scented geraniums have nice aromas.
You can enjoy colorful geranium blooms planted by local Tibetans all summer long when you stroll around the cities in Tibet, especially in the Lhasa ancient streets where you can admire the attractions decorated by the flowers.

Because of its unique geographical environment and climate, Tibet has a variety of rare alpine flowers, such as Meconopsis, the snow lotus, and Rheum Nobile.
Meconopsis
Belonging to the Papaveraceae family, Meconopsis is a famous alpine flower and can bloom near the snow line, so it's also known as “the closest flower to heaven”. It’s popular for its blue flowers, but many species also have many other colors including white, orange, pink and yellow.
It usually grows at altitudes between 3000 to 5000 meters in the Himalayas and the Hengduan Mountains. Every year from June to August in places such as Niangregou, Himalayan Wutiaogou and Jiali County, you can see the thriving life in the most challenging environments.
Snow Lotus Flower
Snow lotus flower, formally known as Saussurea involucrata, is known for its lotus-like corolla. It blooms from July to August, and each blooming period usually lasts for about 10 days.
It only grows at altitudes between 3000 to 5000 meters of snow-capped mountains where the temperatures are extremely low and the oxygen is thin. If you are lucky enough to see the white and aromatic flower, you will be amazed at its strong vitality.
Rheum Nobile
Rheum nobile grows at an altitude of around 4000 meters. It usually takes 5 to 7 years to mature but only blooms once in its lifetime. The flower of Rheum nobile is yellow and resembles a splendid pagoda.

Due to its lower altitude, Nyingchi welcomes spring early in March, offering breathtaking views of peach blossoms. The pink blooms of wild peach trees appear like rosy clouds, in contrast with the snow-capped peaks and blue rivers, provides a perfect chance for a Tibet photography tour.
Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival are held every year to celebrate the magnificence of nature. The festival has become a major attraction of spring tourism in Tibet. It usually held from mid-March to mid-April according to the different blooming times of peach trees in different regions. Generally the peach trees in Bome County bloom first, followed by Zayu County, Bayi District, Milin County, Lang County, and Gongbu Gyamda County.
Apart from the Peach blossoms, every year from mid-May to June, the rhubarb peonies in Zhagong Valley grace the place with their bright yellow color. It’s a rare species that is only found in Tibet, usually thriving at elevations between 2900 and 3200 meters.
Moreover, various azalea burst into bloom from April to June adorning the place with shades of red, pink, yellow, and white. Tibet boasts a rich diversity of azaleas with about 180 different species.
