Potala Palace Tickets: How to Book and Tips for Visiting

July 31, 2024 BY Master Kungga Dundruk 0 COMMENTS

The Potala Palace is a must-see tourist site in Tibet for both domestic and overseas travelers to Lhasa. How to book a ticket to this iconic landmark in Tibet? How much is the Potala Palace ticket? Here, we provide comprehensive information on how to book your Potala Palace ticket, including essential details and tips for visiting this magnificent Tibetan treasure.

Question 1: Where to buy Potala Palace Tickets?

The Potala Palace does not sell same-day tickets. All tourists must make a reservation for a visit with their real name passports or ID cards.

If you book your Tibet tour through a travel agency, the tickets will be included in the tour package, and the travel agency will book the Potala tickets for you.

If traveling by yourself, you need to book your Potala Palace tickets in advance through the official WeChat mini program.

Question 2: How far in advance should I book the Potala Palace ticket?

Generally, tickets for the Potala Place are available for booking 10 days in advance through the WeChat mini program. Please note that same-day ticket purchases are not available on-site. You need to book the ticket one day in advance through the ticket window.

For our Tibet group tours, we typically secure Potala Palace tickets 10 days ahead of time. To ensure a smooth travel experience in Tibet we recommend booking your Tibet tour at least 20 days in advance. This allows enough time for both obtaining the Tibet Travel Permit and securing Potala Palace tickets through official channels.

Question 3: How much is the ticket for the Potala Palace?

There are two different routes for visiting the Potala Palace with different ticket prices. Both routes offer peak-season and off-season ticket options.

The Potala Palace Tickets in the Peak Season (May 1st to October 31st)
Opening Hours: 9:00-15:40
Price Tickets for Route 1: 200 RMB/person (full price), 100 RMB/person (Discounted)
Price Tickets for Route 2: 100 RMB/person (full price), 50 RMB/person (Discounted)

The Potala Palace Tickets in the Off-season (November 1st to April 30th)
Opening Hours: 9:30-15:20
Full Price Tickets for Route 1 and Route 2: 100 RMB/person
Discounted Tickets for Route 1 and Route 2: 50 RMB/person

Question 4: Is there any discount ticket for the Potala Palace?

Tourists over 60 years old can enjoy discounted tickets for the Potala Palace. For more detailed information, please feel free to contact us.

Regardless of age, you can get a half-price ticket during the off-season. In addition, based on experience, the local government will launch a winter tour promotion in Tibet in winter, and you can visit the Potala Palace for free.

However, please note that although the Potala tickets are free, you still need to make an appointment in advance. If you plan to take a Tibet winter tour this year, don’t miss the chance for a free visit to the great Potala Palace.

Tip 1#: Visiting Time and Route of the Potala Palace are Fixed

Once your Potala Palace tickets are booked, neither the travel route nor the entry time can be modified. There are specific visiting periods each day, so please ensure you visit the Potala Palace according to your booked time. Therefore, we may adjust the itinerary of the day according to your ticket’s scheduled travel time.

Since the designated visit time for the Potala Palace is 2 hours, please make sure to complete your visit within this time frame.

Tip 2#: Travel with the passport you used to book the Potala ticket

Real-name authentication is required to visit the Potala Palace. Please ensure you bring your valid ID card or passport and enter the palace at your designated time.

For international tourists, the passport used to enter the palace must be the same one used to book the ticket. If you have multiple passports, please make sure to bring the correct passport.

Conclusion

Potala Palace enjoys a high reputation among tourists both at home and abroad for its rich cultural and historical collections. It is a must-visit place for all Tibet tours. Due to the limited number of visitors allowed each day, it is important to book your Potala Palace ticket in advance.

When you book a Tibet tour with us, the ticket for the Potala Palace is included in the package. Simply provide your valid passport, and we will take care of the rest.

Don’t wait—ensure your visit to this iconic site is smooth and stress-free. Plan your Tibet tour with us now and let us handle everything for a truly memorable Tibet experience!
