Top 15 Tibet Travel FAQs for Planning Your Trip to Tibet

August 27, 2025 BY Master Kungga Dundruk 0 Comment

A journey to Tibet is not as difficult as you think nowadays, but it still needs careful arrangements.

Since both a Chinese Visa and the Tibet Travel Permit are required for visiting Tibet, you need to arrange your trip in advance.

In addition, when the best travel time is, what to experience, and where to stay are also essential things to know while planning your trip to Tibet.

Here, we list the top 15 most frequently asked questions collected from our former customers. Hoping these will help you better arrange your first trip to Tibet.

1. What is a Tibet Travel Permit?

The Tibet Travel Permit is a must for you to visit Tibet. Different from a Chinese Visa, this is a travel permit issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau. Only with the Tibet Travel Permit can you enter the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Since the individual application is not accepted, you need to get it through a local travel agency that provides Tibet tour services for you. This means you need to book a Tibet tour, either a group tour or a private journey, and travel with a tour guide and a driver arranged by the agency.

Generally, the procedure takes about 7 to 9 working days. Once it is issued, it will be delivered to your hand for taking a flight or train to Tibet.

So, it is recommended to book your Tibet tour and apply for the Tibet Travel Permit at least 21 days in advance.

2. Do I need a Chinese Visa to enter Tibet?

Yes, you do.

Before applying for the Tibet Travel Permit, you need to obtain a Chinese Visa in advance.

After booking your Tibet tour, you need to provide copies of your passport and your Chinese Visa for the application of the Tibet Travel Permit.

You can apply for a Chinese Visa through a Chinese Embassy in your country. Or, if you travel from Nepal to Tibet, you can apply for a Group Visa through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.

For those who are eligible to visit China without a visa, it is easy to obtain the Tibet Travel Permit without a Chinese Visa, as only a valid passport is needed.

3. Can I travel to Tibet independently?

Sorry, you can’t travel independently in Tibet.

According to the regulations in Tibet, you need to travel with a local tour guide and take the tourist vehicle (with a driver), which is arranged by a local travel agency.

If you are looking for a more flexible journey to Tibet, you can tailor a private Tibet tour with a one-on-one travel guide and private vehicles. In this way, you can travel more freely at your own pace.

4. Is it safe to travel to Tibet right now?

Absolutely, it is safe to travel to Tibet.

As one of the safest tourist destinations, you do not need to worry about the social security in Tibet. Although there may be cultural barriers and language differences, the locals are kind and hospitable to tourists from around the world.

The only thing you may need to be concerned about is altitude sickness. While traveling to the Roof of the World at an average altitude of around 4,000 meters, it is common for tourists from lower altitude areas to get uncomfortable.

5. What is altitude sickness in Tibet?

Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a normal human response to the lack of oxygen at high altitudes. It varies by different physiques, age, and health conditions. Some people experience mild symptoms, while others may experience more pronounced ones.

The iconic symptoms of altitude sickness in Tibet are headache, shortness of breath, fatigue, or difficulty sleeping. However, the symptom may be relieved as you get used to the plateau environment.

Generally, most tourists adjust to the altitude of Lhasa within a day or two. To help avoid altitude sickness in Tibet, it is recommended to arrange the first few days in Lhasa for better acclimatization to the high altitude.

Moreover, upon your arrival, it is suggested to get a good rest in your hotel rather than rushing into sightseeing. It will give your body time to adapt to the high altitude and make the rest of your journey much more comfortable.

visit Potala Palace in LhasaSpending the first few days in Lhasa is recommended to help with acclimatization to the high altitude.

6. When is the best time to visit Tibet?

The best time to visit Tibet is spring and autumn, including April, May, June, September, and October. In these months, the weather in Tibet is the most pleasant, neither too cold nor too hot. With less rainfall, you can enjoy the clear mountain views, especially when visiting Everest Base Camp in Tibet.

Winter is the ideal time for budget travel in Tibet. During the winter months, from November to February, there are great discounts on local hotels and flights to Tibet. Additionally, several famous attractions in Tibet offer free admission during the winter months, including the Potala Palace, Everest Base Camp, Yamdrok Lake, and the Namtso Lake Scenic Area. If you take a Tibet winter tour during the off-season for tourism in Tibet, you can experience a more tranquil and authentic Tibetan culture at the lowest price of the year.

The summer months, July and August, are peak seasons for tourists in Tibet, coinciding with the summer holiday. However, this is the rainy season in Tibet.

Although the daytime sightseeing may not be affected by night showers or sudden showers in the day, it is not recommended for visiting Everest Base Camp or trekking in Tibet. During the rainy season, the rainfall can cause clouds and mist to shroud the mountain, obscuring the peak and potentially missing your chance to truly admire Mount Everest.

Visit Tibet Everest Base Camp in winterIt is still possible to visit Everest Base Camp in Tibet during winter at a more affordable price.

7. How much money do I need to travel to Tibet?

Generally, the cost of a Tibet tour is around USD 120 to 200 per person per day for joining a small group tour. If you tailor a private journey to Tibet, the cost would be higher as you need to pay for all the expenses without sharing with others.

The Tibet tour cost mostly depends on the travel route, the tour season, and the accommodations you prefer. The longer the itinerary, the more expensive the journey is. For example, the 15-day Mount Kailash tour is over USD 2,000, while the 8-day Everest Base Camp tour from Lhasa is just around USD 950.

If you want to cut down your Tibet tour price, you can join a small group tour in Tibet, which is the most affordable way to travel in Tibet. Moreover, if your time is flexible, you can visit Tibet in winter for off-season discounts. Saving more by choosing economic hotels is also useful to cut down the total price of your journey.

8. How many days should I spend in Tibet?

5 to 8 days is the most popular travel length for Tibet tours. As the most popular travel routes in Tibet, the Lhasa to Everest Base Camp takes 8 days, while the epic overland journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu via the Gyirong border takes 7 days.

The classic Lhasa city tour takes 4 days. For an in-depth exploration of the Holy City and surroundings, you can spend 5 to 6 days visiting nearby holy lakes, such as Yamdrok Lake and Namtso Lake, or experience a short trek around the city.

The Mount Kailash tour generally takes 15 days from Lhasa and back, including the 3-day kora around Mount Kailash. There is also a 10-day journey from Kathmandu to Mount Kailash. You can choose the proper route according to your schedule.

Generally speaking, if you’re looking for an Everest Base Camp tour in Tibet, plan for 7 to 8 days. If you’re heading to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, plan at least 10 days. Short trips around Lhasa, or combined with visits to Shigatse or Nyingchi, can usually be completed within a week. Of course, if you want a cycling tour or trekking experience in Tibet, the tour length will be longer.

9. Are there age limits for visiting Tibet?

Since many tourists are wondering whether there is an age limit for the Tibet Travel Permit, there is no age limit officially. In the past years, we successfully arranged a Mount Kailash tour for an 82-year-old traveler from Germany, and have also organized family trips in Tibet for families with children under five.

For senior tourists and younger kids, it is important to assess the physical condition rather than age.

Senior tourists need to make sure they have no cardiovascular or respiratory conditions before traveling to Tibet, as the lack of oxygen at the Tibetan Plateau poses a great risk for these conditions. Furthermore, sightseeing in Tibet often involves extensive walking and climbing, especially since most monasteries are located in the mountains and lack elevators. Therefore, mobility is crucial, and it is recommended to seek professional advice from your doctor.

For a family with kids, parents should ensure the kids can clearly express their feelings so that if they experience altitude sickness, parents can promptly understand the situation and take appropriate mitigating measures.

10. How to get to Tibet?

Nowadays, it is convenient to get to Tibet by flight, train, or overland.

Lhasa Gonggar Airport is the busiest airport in Tibet, operating flights to Tibet from several mainland cities as well as international flights from Kathmandu and Singapore to Lhasa. The direct flights to Lhasa mainly depart from Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, Xining, Xi’an, Kunming, and so on. It takes 2 to more hours according to the routes you choose.

There are also flights to Nyingchi, the major city in eastern Tibet, from Chengdu, Chongqing, and Beijing. For those who want to start a Tibet journey from a lower altitude area to avoid altitude sickness, it is an ideal option.

Since the flights from Kathmandu and Singapore to Lhasa are not daily, it is recommended to get to the mainland of China first, and then take a flight to Tibet.

The train to Tibet is a unique way to travel to Tibet along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Starting from Xining, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the world’s highest railway with an average altitude of over 4,000 meters. Staying on the specially-designed oxygen-supplies cabin on board, you can enjoy stunning landscapes through the Tibetan Plateau.

Recently, only seven cities in the mainland of China offer trains to Lhasa, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lanzhou, and Xining. Most routes take 2 nights on board, while the shortest journey is from Xining to Lhasa, which takes just 22 hours (one night on he train).

For adventure lovers, there fare five highways stretching to Tibet, offering exciting overland journeys from the mainland of China and Nepal.

The overland journey from Kathmandu to Lhasa via the Friendship Highway is the most popular way to get to Tibet from Nepal. You will travel across the Gyirong border and the Himalayas to experience the best of the Everest area in Tibet with a scenic drive to Lhasa.

The Chengdu to Lhasa overland journey through the southern route of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway is praised as the most beautiful route to Tibet. You will travel westward from the Chengdu Plain through the Sichuan Basin, the Hengduan Mountains, and finally into the Nyingchi region in eastern Tibet, arriving in the holy city of Lhasa. Along the way, you will experience a variety of scenery, including plains, snow-capped mountains, canyons, and forests.

Other highways to Tibet, including the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway, and the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, offer more thrilling overland adventures as the road conditions and environments along the way are more challenging.

Moreover, China is a charming tourist destination to explore for overseas travelers. It is worth a visit before heading to Tibet.

Nepal was once the only international gateway to enter Tibet (but now Singapore also has flights to Tibet). The overland journey from Kathmandu to Lhasa is one of the most epic overland journeys in the world. 12. What are the must-see attractions in Tibet?

If this is your first time to Tibet, then check the top attractions in Tibet for your first exploration to the mysterious Land.

The Potala Palace in Lhasa is the iconic landmark of Tibet. Located on the hill top at the city center, it was once the political and religious center of Tibet. Now, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, opened partly for tourists from home and abroad to learn more about the history, culture, and religion of Tibet.

The Jokhang Temple, with the Barkhor Street around, is another must-see in Lhasa City. Holding the unique 12-year-old statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, the Jokhang Temple is the spiritual center of Tibet. The Barkhor Street is a holy path around the temple. It is not only a lively street full of shops, teahouses, and restaurants, but also a sacred kora path for Tibetan pilgrims.

Located about 6 kilometers north the downtown Lhasa, the Sera Monastery is one of the three greatest Gelugpa monasteries in Tibet. In addition to exploring its ancient halls, don’t miss the chance to witness the famous monks debates in the courtyard every afternoon (except Sundays). It is a unique way Tibetan monks practice Buddhist philosophy.

The Everest Base Camp is no doubt the top reason to visit Tibet for almost western tourists. At around 5,000 meters above sea level, the Everest Base Camp in Tibet is the highest place that ordinary tourists can reach without any trekking or climbing to witness the peak of Mt.Everest.

Mount Kailash in Ngari is the most sacred site for pilgrimage tours in Tibet. As the center of the world by four religions, the 3-day kora around Mount Kailash is a lifetime journey for many pilgrims. Also, it is one of the most popular trekking routes in Tibet. Even you are not a pilgrim, you can experience trekking journey with the most devoted pilgrims.

Namtso Lake, the most famous holy lake in Tibet, is around 204 kilometers north of Lhasa City. 13. Where to stay in Tibet?

Lhasa offers the widest range of hotels in Tibet, from luxury 5-star hotels to economic 3-star hotels. If you are looking for a luxury tour in Tibet, Lhasa will provide the best accommodation experience throughout Tibet.

As you travel beyond Lhasa, the accommodation standards become more basic. In Shigatse and Nyingchi, two other major cities in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, there are also 5-star hotels to choose from. However, the number of luxury hotels is much lower than in Lhasa.

When you visit Everest Base Camp, you can stay overnight in a tent hotel at Everest Base Camp or the Rongbuk Hotel. The accommodation at Everest Base Camp in Tibet has developed a lot during the past year. Now, you can enjoy a clean bed in a standard room with Wi-Fi, heating, and oxygen supply.

However, the accommodation in the Mount Kailash area is some of the most basic in Tibet. In Darchen, at the foot of Mount Kailash, there are simple hotels and guesthouses available. Along the trekking route, only guesthouses offer basic dorm-style rooms.

Generally speaking, hotel options are plentiful in major cities in Tibet, and accommodation in popular tourist destinations, such as Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash, is also improving. However, due to the harsh environment, hotels in Tibet, both in terms of facilities and services, cannot compare to those in the mainland of China or other world-renowned travel destinations. We appreciate your understanding.

While inquiry for your Tibet, you can share your hotel preference with us. We will pick up the best hotels for your needs and budget.

14. Is Tibet good for kids and families?

Tibet, known as the Roof of the World, sounds like a destination full of adventure. However, it is a wonderful destination for family tours, offering breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and unique experiences.

The unique topography and landscape of the Tibet Plateau offer children an unforgettable visual experience. On a Tibet family tour, children can see white clouds seem within reach, snow-capped mountains loom large, and vast grasslands dotted with yaks. All these are rarely seen elsewhere. The colorful prayer flags and shimmering golden roofs of Tibetan monasteries are fascinating and curious for children.

In addition to regular sightseeing, we also arrange visits to Tibetan families. Savoring authentic Tibetan snacks in a local family house and playing with Tibetan children could be an unforgettable and authentic cultural experience.

The popular destinations for families with kids are Lhasa, Shigatse, Yamdrok Lake, and Namtso Lake, which can be visited within a week. And for young teens, it could be a nice idea to visit the Everest Base Camp to witness the top of the world together.
