Tibet is a land of wonder. Its deep spiritual history and unique scenic beauty make it hard to go anywhere in Tibet without finding something beautiful.
The natural scenery has everything from soaring mountains to lush forests and grasslands, and there are unique and historic monasteries and temples all over the region. It's hard to narrow it down into a list without missing something, but here are the most beautiful places in Tibet in my eyes.

If there is one iconic site of Lhasa, it is the magnificent Potala Palace, perched on a hill overlooking the city. The brilliant white architecture on the tip of Red Hill against the backdrop of mountains can only be fully appreciated in person. It is a top UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tibet and a distinct symbol of Tibetan history and culture.
Originally built in the 7th century, Potala Palace has long been the world's highest palace. The grand complex has more than 1,000 rooms and is packed with cultural relics, murals, scroll paintings, and carvings. You can climb the 365 steps from Potala Gate to ascend to the palace and explore the chambers and chapels inside.

2. Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor Street: Beauty and Spirituality in Tibetan Culture
Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street are two closely interlinked sites. Jokhang Temple was founded in the 7th century to house a sacred image of Buddha brought to Tibet. It quickly became an important destination for spiritual pilgrims. Barkhor Street became the pilgrimage route around the temple and evolved into a bustling marketplace.
As one of the holiest sites in Tibetan Buddhism and a stunning example of Tibetan architecture, Jokhang Temple is a focal point for religious ceremonies and festivals. Every day, pilgrims can be seen walking the clockwise route around the temple on Barkhor Street, spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. It is also one of the places to shop for traditional handicrafts and souvenirs and find some of the best restaurants in Lhasa.

Opening hours: Jokhang Temple is open from 9:00-18:00. Mornings are primarily for local pilgrims, while tourists are welcome to visit in the afternoon.
Admission fee: Tickets for Jokhang Temple are 85 CNY. There is no admission fee for Barkhor Street.
Best Time to visit: Sites in Lhasa can be visited year-round. If you go there in early morning, you'll see local pilgrims doing kora and prostrating around the Jokhang Temple.
Time required: A half-day tour of Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street.
3. Mount Everest: Majestic Grandeur of the Himalayas
Mount Everest is world famous as the main peak of the Himalayas and the highest mountain in the world. Shaped like a pyramid, its towering peak is a major attraction for visitors to Tibet and an unforgettable sight. The mountain is surrounded by four other peaks above 8,000 meters and another 38 above 7,000 meters. It is undoubtedly one of the grandest landscapes in the world. You can enjoy the panoramic view of these highest peaks of the Himalaya at Gawula Pass (5198m) on the way to the Everest Base Camp in Tibet.
Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular destinations in Tibet. It is the closest point to the peak of the mountain without having to ascend. Spending overnight at Everest Base Camp in Tibet is a chance to see the stunning sunset and sunrise and gaze at the mountain against the backdrop of the Milky Way.

Time required: 1 day with an overnight stay at Everest Base Camp.
Travel Tips: During winter, the tent hotels at Everest Base Camp are typically closed. For overnight accommodations, you can only stay in the villages at the base of the mountain instead.
4. Namtso Lake: Ocean-like Holy Lake in Tibet
Lake Namtso has a surreal beauty with its sparkling sapphire waters. Around 250 km from Lhasa, the high-altitude lake is one of Tibet's Great Three Holy Lakes and the highest saltwater lake in the world at 4,718 m. The gentle curve of the lake's shore is a picturesque sight surrounded by vast grasslands and the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountain Range.
The kora around Namtso Lake is an important spiritual pilgrimage for Tibetan Buddhists. They are a frequent sight, along with the migratory birds, wild asses, and other high-altitude wildlife that visit the shores. While visiting the Lake Namtso, you can not only enjoy the serene environment but also the panoramic views of the Tibetan Plateau along the way there.

Travel Tips: Staying overnight at Namtso Lake is not an option. Accommodation for overnight stays is available in Damxung.
5. Yamdrok Lake: the Turquoise Jewel of Tibet

7. The Ruins of Guge Kingdom: Lost Civilization in Wild West Tibet
The grand palace ruins, standing on a 300m high yellow earth hill, are an important cultural relic site of the Ancient Guge Kingdom. Dating back to the 10th century, the kingdom was established in what is now Ngari Prefecture. It thrived for hundreds of years before disappearing.
The ruins were rediscovered in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the main archeological site today covers 720,000 square meters and includes caves, secret tunnels, and pagodas. It is a grand sight and a powerful reminder of Tibet's mysterious history.

Best Time to visit: Summer is the best time to visit the grassland in northern Tibet. And August is the best month to enjoy the natural beauty and the interesting horse racing festivals in the northern Tibet grassland.
9. Lulang Forest: The Vast Forest You Never Imagined in Tibet
Towering mountains are what comes to mind about Tibet for most people, but it is also a place of vast forests. One of the most beautiful for its unimaginable beauty is Lulang Forest in eastern Tibet.
Lulang means "Dragon King Valley" in the Tibetan language or "a place that will make you forget your home". It's a fitting name for the mesmerizing landscape of trees and flowers that change color with the seasons, set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.
Lulang Forest mesmerizes with its tranquil beauty, a verdant oasis in nature's embrace.At 3,700m, the plateau-mountain meadow in Nyingchi Prefecture is 1km wide and stretches over 15 km long. It is a constantly shifting landscape with blooming azaleas in the spring, golden waves of wheat in summer, brilliant red and yellow leaves in autumn, and a quiet blanket of snow in the winter.
From the Lulang Forest platform, you may also have a chance to get a panoramic view of the Namcha Barwa, the highest peak in Nyingchi at 7,782 meters.

How to get there: Drive from Nyingchi, approximately 90 minutes. Or during the Sichuan Tibet overland tour via G318 National Highway.
Best Time to Visit: Each season has a special character. From July until September, there are blooming flowers, and the forest is vibrant green.
10. Gama Valley: the Most Beautiful Everest Trek in Tibet

Best Time to visit: April to May or September to October. These times have the best weather, with clear skies and good visibility. The orchids are in full bloom from May to June.
Time required: A classic Gama Valley trek takes around 8 days and allows you to see all the amazing natural attractions, such as the Juniper Forest and Orchid Valley.
