The Mt. Kailash trek, also known as the Mt. Kailash Kora, spans 52km around the sacred mountain and follows a clockwise direction starting from Darchen. For most of our guests, it takes 3 days and 2 nights to finish the entire trekking.
The first day of the Mt. Kailash trek starts from Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery. It covers around 20km and takes about 6 to 7 hrs to reach the Dirapuk Monastery. It is mild and moderate.
Along the way, your first highlight is the Prayer Flag Square, where countless colorful prayer flags flying in the wind, especially magnificent during the Saga Dawa Festival. Continuing onward, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the pyramid-shaped north face of Mt. Kailash.
On the second day, you will walk from Dirapuk Monastery to Zuthulpuk Monastery, with the drastic ascent and descent during the trek. The entire trek covers about 24 km, you will stay at Zuthulpuk Monastery overnight for the second day.
During this section, you can admire the sunrise over Mt. Kailash in the morning. As the trek continues, you’ll reach Jarok Donkhang, where traditional Tibetan funeral sky burials are performed. Then comes the Dolma-la Pass at an elevation of 5,630 meters, followed by the serene Lake of Compassion.
The last day’s trek from Zuthulpuk Monastery to Darchen. It is the easiest and most relaxing part of the trek. This 14-km walk take around 3 hours and downhill walk back to Darchen. This marks the successful end of your Mount Kailash trek.
Once you arrive Darchen, you can continue your journey to Lake Manasarovar with a smooth bus transfer, located 41 km southeast of Mt. Kailash. As the holiest lake in Tibet, it’s a perfect place for a leisurely walk along the shore while enjoying the stunning view of Mt. Kailash from afar.

How Hard Is the Trek? What Are the Most Challenging Parts?
Among all the trekking routes in Tibet, the Mt. Kailash trek is considered a challenging one due to its high altitude and dramatic elevation changes. That said, the trek is achievable for anyone with decent fitness and well-preparation.
The second day of the Mount Kailash trek is considered the most challenging. On this day, you’ll cross the Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters. The route includes roughly 600 meters of ascent followed by about 900 meters of steep descent over rocky slopes. Even in summer, the trail can be icy and covered with loose stones, requiring extra caution.
Weather also plays a major role in the the trek. Conditions at such high altitude can shift rapidly from sunshine to snow or rain within hours. Temperatures can drop sharply at night or early in the morning. The high altitude also influences. The entire trekking route averages around 4,800 meters above sea level, and some trekkers experience some symptoms of altitude sickness in Tibet. This is completely normal, and we make regular stops at supply points where you can rest and enjoy simple meals to recover your strength.
Note: Due to harsh winter weather, heavy snow can block the roads, and extreme cold makes trekking around Mount Kailash impossible from November to March. Therefore, October is generally the last suitable month of the year to enjoy the Mount Kailash trek.

Although most of our guests successfully complete the Mount Kailash tour with us, there are a few situations where someone might not be able to finish the trek. The common reasons include health-related issues and sudden changes in severe weather.
Trekking at high altitude can cause symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath. Slightly symptoms of the altitude sickness in Tibet you can rest to overcome. But if you are encounter severe discomfort during the trekking, it is always to prioritize your health since we put the safety of our guest first.
Another possible reason is sudden changes in the weather. Although this is quite rare, the conditions around Mount Kailash can shift quickly, from clear skies to strong winds, snow, or hail with thick fog. Unexpected weather may require rescheduling the route for safety reasons.
However, such situations are uncommon. Our experienced Tibetan guides always prioritize your safety and will monitor your condition throughout the trek. We also carry plenty of oxygen supplies, and porters are available to help so that you can walk at an easier pace.
Most of the time, we encourage trekkers to “walk and see” - to take it step by step, rest when needed. With good support and the right mindset, you’ll likely complete this sacred trek.
