May 06, 2025 BY Pasang 0 COMMENTS

If you are reading this, you are probably planning your first trip to China with the Tibet Autonomous Region included, yet get confused about the China Visa and Tibet Travel Permit. Believe me, you are not alone, and no worries!

In this tutorial, we will clarify the difference between China Visa and Tibet Travel Permit and offer you expert travel advice on how to apply for them both to ensure your visit to China, including Tibet, goes smoothly.

China Visa and Tibet Travel Permit: China Visa for Entering China, Tibet Travel Permit for Entering Tibet Autonomous Region Afterwards

A China Visa or Chinese Visa is an official permit issued by the Chinese government for foreign nationals to enter China.

For most overseas travelers, you need a China Visa, typically a “L” (Tourist) visa to board the flight to Chinese arrival cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Kunming, and Xi'an. A tourist visa usually allows you to stay 30-90 days in China.

On the other hand, a Tibet Travel Permit is a travel document issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau for foreign nationals who plan to visit Tibet from other mainland Chinese cities. You need to present your Tibet Travel Permit at checkpoints to board a flight, a Tibet train, or travel overland to Tibet.

China Visa and Tibet Travel Permit: Apply for a China Visa Yourself First, then Get a Tibet Travel Permit from a Tibet Travel Agency

The processes for applying for a China tourist visa and Tibet Travel Permit are different. A Chinese tourist visa (L Visa) is needed before applying for the Tibet Travel Permit.

Any individual can apply for a China visa at the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate. Some cities have dedicated a Chinese Visa Application Service Center to handle all applications. Check the Chinese Embassy or Consulate website for information about where to apply.

According to Tibet's travel policy, international travelers can’t apply for a Tibet Travel Permit individually. Instead, you have to pre-book a Tibet tour with a local Tibet travel agency like Tibet Vista, which will help you tender the application to the Tibet Tourism Bureau on your behalf.

China Visa and Tibet Travel Permit: Different Documents Needed and Visa Processing

The requirements and processing time for the China visa and Tibet Travel Permit differ. Preparing all documents and requirements in advance will speed up the application process.

Chinese Tourist Visa Requirements:
- Passport with at least one blank visa page and six months remaining validity.
- Photocopy of passport bio-data page.
- Visa Application Form signed and completed and a signed Confirmation of Online Visa Application.
- Color passport-sized photo (48mm x 33mm) taken in front of a plain white background, bare-headed, face-centered and looking straight, and taken within the last six months.
- Copy of previous Chinese visa and passport.
- Documents showing the itinerary, including air ticket booking record and hotel reservation.

After the application has been accepted, the standard processing time is four working days. Express three-day service is available for an extra fee.

Tibet Travel Permit Requirements:

After receiving your Chinese tourist visa, email a photo image of your passport information page and Chinese visa page to your travel agency. They will apply for the Tibet Travel Permit on your behalf. The normal processing time is 8-9 working days, but we recommend starting the process at least 20 days in advance.
