Currently, there are no hotels in Zhangmu town or at Zhangmu Port that can accommodate international travelers.
The main reason goes back to the 2015 Nepal 8.1-magnitude earthquake, which caused severe damage in Zhangmu. After the earthquake, Chinese experts concluded that the old Zhangmu town was no longer safe for living. For safety, our local government relocated residents and businesses to the newly developed Zhangmu New Town in Shigatse at a higher elevation. Since then, only a few humble hostels and basic facilities remain in Zhangmu.
Besides, today, Zhangmu mainly serves as a customs and cargo port, while tourist entry from or to Nepal has shifted to the Gyirong Port, which is much better equipped for international travelers.
So, if you are planning to stay overnight before crossing Zhangmu Port to Nepal, the best option for overseas travelers is to choose Nyalam County, which is 41km or around 1 hour’s drive to Zhangmu Port. Here, you will find more comfortable accommodations and dining options.

At 3,810 meters above sea level, Nyalam County Seat marks the final stretch of the scenic G318 National Highway. For travelers who travel overland from Lhasa to Kathmandu, Nyalam County will be your last and most important stop for overnight, supplies, and preparation before crossing Zhangmu Port to Nepal.

At present, Nyalam has only 4 basic 2-star hotels for international travelers, mostly opened around 2022 and located in the town center. You will also see a handful of family-run guesthouses and homestays that mainly serve domestic travelers. All of these hotels in Nyalam are built for basic and convenient overnight stays rather than ultimate comfort. So, it is best to play down your expectations and enjoy it as part of the border-town experience.
Most hotel rooms are standard twins or triple rooms with simple furnishings. Because of the high altitude (around 3,800 meters), nights here are very cold. Almost every hotel provides electric blankets and an air conditioner, while a few better ones may offer small electric heaters or underfloor heating.
Besides, the 2-star hotels offer private bathrooms with basic Western-style toilets. While other hotels have shared bathrooms and communal showers. The great thing is that the hot water is available 24/7, so you can enjoy a warm shower at any time to refresh yourself after the journey.
