Accommodation in Tibet has been greatly improved during these years. There are modern hotels in major cities like Lhasa, Shigatse, and Nyingchi. Also, the guesthouses in remote areas of Tibet are trying their best to suit travelers’ needs. However, due to the lack of resources in such a high land, the overall level of accommodation in Tibet is lower than that in other cities of mainland China.

How is the accommodation in Tibet?
With the development of tourism, the accommodation in Tibet is improving. A lot of modern hotels brought up in recent years, and all are equipped with hot running water, en-suite bathrooms, and air-conditioning.
The best accommodation in Tibet is in Lhasa city, followed by Shigatse, Nyingchi, and Tsedang. The accommodations in remote areas along the route are more basic, usually having no private bathroom in the room. And the public bathroom only has squat toilets.
For trips to Everest Base Camp, Namtso Lake, and Mount Kailash, you can only stay in guesthouses run by local monasteries or Tibetan residents. The accommodations of these guesthouses are poor, with no showers. It is suggested to bring your own sleeping bag and personal toiletries.
How much does it cost to stay at a hotel in Tibet?
Nowadays, there are many places to stay in Tibet, from basic guesthouses to luxury 5-star hotels.
Usually, the price for a 3-star hotel or a guesthouse is from 15 to 32 USD. The cost of a 4-star hotel will reach to 6USD. In Lhasa, the most extravagant five-star hotels are priced from 200USD per night.
The cost of Tibet hotels will vary depending on the season. In the summer, the peak season of Tibet tourism, the hotel prices are higher and you need to make your reservation as early as possible, while in winter, the low season of Tibet tourism, most hotels will have discounted rates.
Please notice that some small hotels and guesthouses will be closed during the winter months due to only a few tourists traveling to Tibet. Please confirm the details when arranging the tour with our travel consultant.
Is there any hotel restrictions for foreign travelers to Tibet?
The only restriction is for hotels not for tourists that only have a license can a hotel, a hostel, or a guesthouse in Tibet, as well as in mainland China, can accommodate foreigners.

Nowadays, several five-star hotels have opened in Lhasa, Tibet, such as St. Regis Lhasa Resort, Shangri-La Hotel, Brahmaputra Grand Hotel, Manasarovar Hotel, Four Points Sheraton Hotel, and Intercontinental Lhasa Paradise.
It’s worth noting that due to the lack of resources and supplies in Tibet plateau, the five-star hotels in Tibet are not comparable to those in other tourist destinations, either in terms of hardware or service. In this region with limited development and limited resources, please do not expect too much from the so-called luxury hotels.
Is it easy to find a hotel if traveling to Tibet in winter?
Winter is the low season for Tibet tourism. 80% of hotels close in winter for low travel season, the hot water supply in winter is quite poor.
But in Lhasa, you still have choices from top luxury hotels to budget-friendly hotels, for a winter tour in Tibet.
At Everest Base Camp, the tent guesthouses will close due to the cold weather. Only Rongbuk Monastery Guest House is available to stay at for an EBC tour in winter.
Where to stay in Gyirong for a Tibet Nepal Overland Tour?
On the day before you pass through the Gyirong border, you will live in Gyirong town. There are not many accommodation options for you to choose from. Your accommodation will be arranged by your travel agency, so you don’t need to book the room on your own.
Though it is a small town at the Sino-Nepal border, all Gyirong hotels have modern facilities and hot water for showers. You can take a good rest after your EBC tour before heading to Kathmandu.
Where to find laundry services in Lhasa?
Laundry Services in Tibet are quite common in most starred hotels in Lhasa. The cost of laundry service varies from hotel to hotel. You can consult our travel expert to find a local hotel that can provide laundry services and advise you of the price of the service.
Most economic hotels and guesthouses in Tibet don’t have the laundry service. But don’t worry. It is easy to find a laundry shop in Lhasa city. For a few pieces of cloths to wash, you may leave them to the laundry shop in the morning before you start your trip and you can pick them up when you return from your day of sightseeing. Others may take 2 to 3 days if you have a lot of laundries.
For your Tibet trip outside Lhasa city, it is hard to find laundry services. If you are going to trek or to the Everest Base Camp, you can only wash your clothes by hand and sometimes there is no enough time to dry them out.
You can prepare some clean clothes for your trip outside Lhasa and some waterproof laundry bags for dirty clothes that you can take them back to Lhasa for laundry.
