Day to Day Itinerary

Trip Details

Day 1: Nyingchi Arrival and Cypress Nature Reserve

Tashi Delek and welcome to Nyingchi!

When you arrive in Nyingchi in the morning, our friendly local Tibetan guide will be expecting you at Nyingchi Mainling Airport with a Hada, the traditional Tibetan ceremonial scarf, and warm blessings.

Then, our local guide will whisk you off to your hotel in the Bayi Town (2,900m) of Nyingchi. After checking in at the hotel, you can explore the hotel surroundings or have a good rest at your hotel for a smooth acclimatization.

In the afternoon, we are about to visit the Great Cypress Nature Reserve Area, which is 12min’s drive southeast of Bayi Town. You can see towering ancient cypress trees with 2,500 years old, the oldest tree in China. Since the holy cypress tree is related to the Bön founder Tonpa Shenrab. It’s also a sacred place for pilgrimage by local Tibetans.

Stay overnight in Bayi Town, Nyingchi.

Where to Stay?
Throughout your journey, our senior guests will stay in carefully selected 4-star or 5-star hotels in Nyingchi, Lhasa, and Shigatse, ensuring a comfortable and restful experience. All of these hotels are equipped with oxygen supply systems to help you relax after each day’s exploration.

Day 2: Nyingchi to Lulang Forest, Gongbu Tibetan Family Visit, and Back to Nyingchi (B, D)

After breakfast, we’ll drive towards Lulang Forest, a stunning alpine valley known as the “Switzerland of Tibet,” where lush meadows, dense alpine forests, and snow-capped peaks come together in a breathtaking panorama.

From its Sejila Mountain pass (4,728m), you may marvel at the imposing Mt. Namcha Barwa (7,782m), credited as the most beautiful snow-capped peak in China (best viewed from late October to April).

Our adventure continues to the Lulang Forest, nestling in a vast, lush valley. Here, you can take in sweeping views of dense alpine forests and snow-capped peaks, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and enjoy a peaceful walk surrounded by untouched natural beauty.

Later, we’ll visit a traditional Gongbu Tibetan family. You can step into their warm home to enjoy homemade Tibetan sweet tea, make pancakes with an elder Tibetan mother, and chat with them with the help of our local experts by the fire.

At the dinner table, you will savor authentic Gongbu Tibetan dishes, including the famous Nyingchi delicacy, free-range Tibetan pigs for dinner. You’ll also have the chance to dress in traditional Gongbu Tibetan costumes for memorable photos.

As the day winds down, we will enjoy a 1h30min drive back to Bayi Town.

Stay overnight in Bayi Town, Nyingchi.

Day 3: Nyingchi to Lhasa through Enchanting Basum Tso Lake (B)

Today, you’ll continue westward toward Lhasa, with a detour to the serene Basum Tso Lake, widely known as one of the most beautiful lakes in eastern Tibet.

After breakfast, you will first visit Basum Tso Lake, a beautiful holy lake of the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism. You can hike to the Daqiela Viewing Platform and enjoy the panoramic view of Basum Tso Lake, which resembles a crescent moon nestled in a high mountain gorge. The lake is crystal clear, with rippling azure waves and playful fish, adding a delightful touch to the scenery.

Besides, you will visit the Tsodzong Monastery on the heart-shaped island in the lake. This Nyingma-Red Sect monastery boasts a 1500-year history. Encircled by dense, tranquil forests, the temple seems to guard the jade-like lake securely.

After that, you can jump on the tourist yacht and enjoy yachting on the serene Basum Tso Lake to get a close look at this holy lake and the surrounding snowy peaks.

Later, we will hit the road again, and by late afternoon, you will finally arrive in Lhasa, the cultural, political, and spiritual heart of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Check in at your hotel in downtown Lhasa for a good rest.

Stay overnight in Lhasa.

  • day image Enjoy yachting on the serene Basumtso Lake.

Day 4: Lhasa Tour: Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street Kora, Sera Monastery (B)

In the morning, after breakfast, you will immerse yourself in the sacred Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibet. Follow a long line of pilgrims in the dimly lit chambers to worship the life-size statue of a 12-year-old Buddha Sakyamuni.

Then, walk clockwise with prostrating Tibetan pilgrims to experience the famous 1km Barkhor circuit kora (pilgrimage trek) and unwind in a local teahouse to rest your legs and enjoy Tibetan sweet tea, noodles, momos, and Sha Phaley (crispy Tibetan bread), while soaking in the lively local Tibetan life, chatting with friendly locals. If time and energy allow, you may enjoy a slow wander through the quiet backstreets of Lhasa.

In the afternoon, you will explore Sera Monastery, the second-largest Gelug monastery next to Drepung. You can appreciate the exquisitely made sand Mandala and admire Buddhist paintings.

The biggest highlight is to watch the dramatic monk debate (15:00 - 17:00, from Monday to Saturday). By clapping hands, jumping, yelling, and rolling a Buddhist mala, the standing monk furiously debates with the other monk sitting on the ground about Buddhist philosophy.

Stay overnight in Lhasa.

  • day image Explore Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibet.
  • day image Witness the dramatic Tibetan monk debate in Sera Monastery.

Day 5: Lhasa Tour: Potala Palace, Norbulingka Picnic (B)

After breakfast, your first stop is the Potala Palace, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Lhasa Old Town. Discover the lives and stories of the Dalai Lamas through history within the palace, and the extraordinary treasures it holds. The most valuable collections of Potala Palace are the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave of the 33rd great king of Tibet.

Since visiting the Potala Palace involves a steady climb up stone stairs, for some of our senior guests who may find walking difficult, we can arrange a comfortable teahouse or café nearby, where you can relax and still enjoy beautiful views of the Potala Palace without the need for a long climb.

After touring the Potala Palace, you will visit Zongjiao Lukang Park at the foot of the Potala Palace. Here, you can appreciate the majestic Potala Palace from a different perspective and engage in local Tibetan folk activities like the traditional Tibetan circle dance.

In the afternoon, we head to Norbulingka Park, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lamas. Here, we’ll set up a traditional Lingka (Tibetan picnic) under lush trees. You can sip Tibetan sweet tea, snack on local pastries, and enjoy the cool afternoon breeze. Besides, you can follow our local guide to explore the traditional Tibetan palaces within walking distance.

After a full but gentle day of sightseeing, we return to the hotel for a comfortable rest.

Stay overnight in Lhasa.

  • day image Visit the iconic Potala Palace at a gentle pace.
  • day image Stroll through the enchanting Norbulingka Palace.

Day 6: Lhasa Tour: Drepung Monastery, Tibetan Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop (B)

After a hearty breakfast, we will enjoy a leisurely visit to Drepung Monastery, which was once the largest monastery in Tibet, capable of accommodating over 7,000 monks.

We take our time walking through the monastery at a comfortable pace, allowing you to explore its murals & mantras on the gigantic rocks, and spin Tibetan prayer wheels with locals. Our guide will provide detailed explanations of the famous Coqen Hall and Loseling College, and the worldview of Tibetan Buddhism and its history.

By exploring Tibetan monks’ dormitories, you will gain insights into the Tibetan monks' daily routines and living conditions.

In the afternoon, we will gather at our cultural center workshop. Here, you will be guided by local Tibetan experts through meaningful hands-on activities.

You will begin with a peaceful Tibetan meditation session, gently guided in a simple and easy-to-follow way.

After that, our local expert will introduce you to the art of traditional Tibetan incense making, where you’ll experience how natural herbs are carefully blended by hand. You will also print a Tibetan prayer flag pattern, symbols of blessings carried by the wind across the mountains.

What’s more, you’ll have a chance to try writing Tibetan script yourself and appreciate its unique, flowing beauty as an art form. You can take home these precious handmade Tibetan incense, prayer flags, or your own Tibetan calligraphy works as lovely gifts for your family and friends.

Finally, we return to your hotel in the late afternoon, leaving the evening free for rest or a peaceful stroll in Lhasa.

Stay overnight in Lhasa.

Day 7: Lhasa (3,650m) to Gyantse County (4,020m) (B, L)

After breakfast, you’ll enjoy a scenic drive from Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake, a turquoise gem surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Here, you’ll experience a different side of Tibet, the peace and tranquility outside the bustling Lhasa city.

The Yamdrok Lake reflects various colors in different lights. You can also see local nomads grazing their yaks on the lakeshore.

Besides, since the weather here can be cool and windy at high passes, we recommend dressing warmly and comfortably. Please bring a beanie, a light down jacket, and anything else that helps you stay cozy while enjoying the scenery at a relaxed pace.

For lunch, you will visit a local family restaurant and enjoy the local dishes by the lakeside. On the platform, you can also savor a cup of coffee and relish leisure time while indulging in the stunning view of Yamdrok Lake from the southeast corner.

Then continue your journey to Gyantse. Along the way, stop to admire the stunning Karola Glacier right by the roadside, perfect for a few unforgettable photos. You’ll also cross Simila Mountain Pass, where you can hang prayer flags and send heartfelt wishes for your family and friends.

After arriving in enchanting Gyantse County, you will enjoy a gentle stroll through Pelkor Monastery, a special Buddhist site where three Tibetan Buddhist traditions, Gelug, Sakya, and Bon, coexist harmoniously under one roof.

Just a minute’s walk away, you can explore the Gyantse Kumbum, the most famous landmark of Gyantse. This 32-meter-high, seven-story stupa features a unique Nepali style, with Buddha's wise eyes on all four sides. Its white layers are decorated with stripes, and it’s topped with a golden dome that looks like a crown.

Stay overnight in Gyantse for acclimatization.

  • day image Enjoy sweeping views of the turquoise Yamdrok Lake.
  • day image Enjoy traditional food in a Tibetan family restaurant.

Day 8: Gyantse(4,020m) to Lhatse (4,010m) via Shigatse (3,840m) (B)

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic one-and-a-half-hour drive through endless Tibetan barley fields and scattered farmhouses as you make your way to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and the gateway to Mount Everest.

In Shigatse, you can roam over the Tashilunpo Monastery, the main sect of the Panchen Lama, a great scholar in Tibetan Buddhism. After you enter this massive monastery, you can see locals doing kora around iconic white stupas, while those beneath the tree are drinking sweet tea and chatting leisurely.

In the Maitreya Temple, you can admire the world’s largest statue of Maitreya (26m), made of 278kg of gold and 23,000kg of copper, and continue through peaceful alleys to visit the tomb of the 10th Panche Lama and sit on a cushion and meditate along with the monks in the tranquil Assembly Hall.

In the afternoon, you will wander through the Samzhubze Old Market in the old quarter of Shigatse, where narrow lanes, traditional shops, and local stalls offer a glimpse into everyday Tibetan life at a relaxed and easy pace.

Here, you can take your time browsing handmade crafts, prayer items, and local snacks, or simply sit back and enjoy a cup of Tibetan sweet tea while soaking in the warm, authentic atmosphere of the town.

Then, you will board our comfortable tour bus for a scenic final drive (around 2 hours) to Lhatse County (4,010m), where you will rest and acclimatize before continuing your journey to Everest Base Camp the next day.

Stay overnight in Lhatse for acclimatization.

Day 9: Lhatse (4,010m) to Everest Base Camp (5,010m) (B)

After breakfast, you will set out on a memorable journey toward Mount Everest.

First, you will pass Gyatsola Pass (5280m). At Gyatsola Pass viewpoint, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest. Hidden behind the mountain range, the Everest resembles a budding lotus flower, a captivating sight along the roadside.

Shortly after we enter Mount Everest National Nature Reserve, you will enjoy the panoramic view of the Himalayas at Gawula Pass (5198m). From this viewpoint, you will marvel at the majestic lineup of the five highest peaks in the Himalayas, including Everest at the forefront. This is your second glimpse of Everest.

Then we drive along the new zigzag road to Everest Base Camp (5,010m). As you get close to the base camp, the majestic Everest gradually unfolds before you, drawing nearer with each winding turn. This marks your third view of Everest.

Upon reaching Everest Base Camp, the colossal white pyramid peak of Mount Everest stands towering before you. As the day transitions to dusk, witness the golden hues of the sun casting a warm glow on Everest's northern face - your fourth view.

As night falls, the sparkling Milky Way and the snow-white peak of Mount Everest reveal your fifth and final encounter with Everest.

Stay overnight at Rongbuk Hotel (4,980m) near EBC or Zhaxizong Village (4,200m).

Insider Tips:
For our senior guests, if you adapt well to the altitude at Everest Base Camp (5,010m), we will arrange your stay at Rongbuk Hotel, the closest and most comfortable accommodation near Everest. If you experience any discomfort from the altitude, we can instead arrange an overnight stay at Zhaxizong Village (4,200m), nearly 1,000 meters lower, where you will find it easier to rest and sleep.

For both options, essential comforts such as oxygen supply, floor heating, hot water, clean Western-style toilets, and on-site dining are available. Throughout the journey, our experienced local Tibetan guide will be by your side, providing attentive support and helping ensure a safe, enjoyable, and worry-free experience.

Please note that visibility of Mount Everest is subject to weather conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

Day 10: Everest Base Camp to Shigatse (B, D)

After breakfast, before departing from the base camp, you will visit Rongbuk Monastery, the world’s highest monastery, where nuns and monks live together at 5154 meters above sea level.

Then, you'll return to Shigatse via Dinggye, taking an alternative Himalayan route different from the traditional path. Here, you’ll stop at the Dinggye Xilin Viewpoint.

You can not only see the majestic eastern slope of the towering Mount Everest again, but also the world's fourth-highest peak, Mount Lhotse, standing at an elevation of 8,516 meters. Additionally, you can enjoy the vast and delightful wetland landscape at the foot of Mount Everest.

Next, you’ll make a brief stop in the ancient town of Sakya to explore the Sakya Monastery, the “treasure house” of Tibetan Buddhism. Inside the Sakya Monastery library, you can see around 24,000 ancient texts, including 8,848 volumes of precious Buddhist scripture. Many of these texts are written in gold and are over 800 years old, making them the largest and longest scriptures in Tibet.

You may also head up to the rooftop to capture the iconic view of the monastery's red, black, and white colors against the grey walls. Or discover Buddhist treasures like a white conch shell, a gift from Kublai Khan, and soak in rich Buddhist traditions and holy vibes at this hidden gem.

After your visit to Sakya Monastery, you will enjoy a relaxing drive back to Shigatse. In the evening, a warm hearty dinner awaits you, a perfect way to celebrate your unforgettable journey to the world’s highest peak.
