9 Days Tibet Milky Way & Night Sky Photography Tour: Mount Everest & Namtso Lake

Welcome to Tibet!

Upon arrival in Lhasa, your guide will meet you at the airport or train station and assist with luggage handling. You will then be transferred to your hotel in the city.

On the way to Lhasa, you can enjoy views of highland valleys, snow-capped mountains, and the vast Tibetan landscape. Many first-time visitors are impressed by the clear blue sky, clean air, and peaceful plateau scenery.

As this is your first day at high altitude, no photography activities are arranged. The focus is on rest and acclimatization.

We recommend resting well after check-in, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding showers, alcohol, and strenuous activity to help your body adjust to the altitude.

If you feel well, you may take a short walk near your hotel and experience the calm atmosphere of winter Lhasa. In the evening, the Potala Palace looks especially beautiful under city lights, marking the beginning of your photography journey in Tibet.

Today is dedicated to cultural and street photography in Lhasa, focusing on the city’s daily life, religion, and architecture.

In the morning, visit the Potala Palace area for photography. Early light in Lhasa is soft and clear, creating strong contrast on the white palace walls and golden roofs. This is one of the best times to capture classic city views of Lhasa.

You can also shoot from different viewpoints such as Potala Palace Square and nearby photography spots, capturing the palace with the surrounding high-altitude city landscape.

Continue to Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, the cultural and spiritual center of Lhasa. This area is always active with pilgrims performing kora and local people carrying out daily life.

Walking slowly through Barkhor Street, you can photograph prayer wheels, traditional Tibetan clothing, incense smoke, old stone streets, and candid street scenes.

In the afternoon, continue street photography around Barkhor Street. This is a good time to capture teahouses, local shops, rooftop details, and everyday life in Lhasa’s old town under soft winter light.

In the evening, depending on weather conditions, you may photograph the night view of Potala Palace, which offers a completely different atmosphere under city lights.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Manla Reservoir, highland road landscapes, snow mountain reflections, Gyantse Dzong (distant view), and golden hour light over the plateau.

After breakfast, depart from Lhasa and drive toward Shigatse, entering the main high-altitude landscape photography region of Tibet.

First, cross Kamba La Pass and stop at the viewpoint overlooking Yamdrok Lake. From above, the lake shows different shades of blue depending on light and weather conditions, surrounded by snow mountains and vast highland terrain. This is one of the most iconic photography locations in Tibet. Along the way, short stops may be arranged for photographing the lake, road curves, yaks, and plateau scenery.

Continue to Karola Glacier, one of the most accessible glacier landscapes in Tibet. The massive ice formation descending from the mountains creates strong visual impact, especially under sunlight. On clear days, you may also capture the contrast between glacier, road, and surrounding mountains.

Next, pass by Manla Reservoir, where calm water reflects the surrounding valleys and snow peaks. This location is suitable for wide-angle landscape photography and telephoto compositions of distant mountains.

On the way, you will also have a distant view of Gyantse Dzong, an ancient fortress located on a hilltop. It offers a strong cultural and historical element to the landscape, especially under clear highland light.

Arrive in Shigatse in the evening. As altitude increases, the night sky becomes clearer, creating ideal conditions for upcoming Everest Milky Way photography preparation.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Tashilhunpo Monastery, Himalayan highway landscapes, Mount Everest, Lhotse, Everest sunset glow, Milky Way photography, snow mountain night sky, and astrophotography timelapse.

After breakfast, depart from Shigatse and drive toward Everest Base Camp, entering the core region of this Tibet astrophotography tour.

Before departure, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery for early morning photography. Under soft sunlight, the golden rooftops of the monastery stand out against the hillside and city of Shigatse, creating strong contrasts for cultural and architectural photography.

Continue along the Sino-Nepal Highway, passing vast highland grasslands, snow mountains, and winding roads. This route is one of the classic landscapes for Tibetan road and plateau photography.

If weather permits, stop at Gyawu La Pass, where you may view several 8,000-meter peaks along the Himalayan range.

As you approach the Everest region, the landscape becomes more dramatic. Snow mountains, glaciers, and vast open valleys dominate the scenery. You may also photograph Mount Lhotse and surrounding Himalayan peaks along the way.

Arrive at Everest Base Camp in the afternoon. In the evening, wait for the sunset golden glow on Mount Everest, one of the most iconic moments in this region.

After sunset, prepare for the highlight of the day: Everest Milky Way photography. With high altitude, minimal light pollution, and clear air conditions, this area offers excellent opportunities for capturing the Milky Way over Mount Everest and the surrounding snow peaks.

If conditions are favorable, you may also capture star trails and astrophotography timelapse scenes throughout the night. The shooting schedule will be adjusted according to weather, cloud cover, and Milky Way timing to ensure the best results.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Mount Everest sunrise, Rongbuk Monastery, Everest morning light, Himalayan snow mountains, highland road landscapes, Mount Shishapangma (distant view), and plateau river valley scenery.

Early in the morning, photograph the sunrise over Mount Everest. On clear days, the first light slowly touches the summit, turning the mountain from deep blue to golden tones. This is one of the most iconic moments in Everest photography.

Continue to Rongbuk Monastery, one of the highest monasteries in the world and a classic viewpoint for photographing Mount Everest. In the early morning light, the monastery appears quiet and solemn, surrounded by snow mountains and the vast Himalayan landscape.

After breakfast, begin the drive back to Shigatse. Along the way, you will pass highland grasslands, river valleys, and mountain roads, with opportunities for short stops depending on weather and light conditions.

If conditions are clear, you may also see Mount Shishapangma and surrounding peaks in the distance. The afternoon light creates strong mountain layers, making it ideal for capturing highland road and telephoto landscape photography.

Arrive in Shigatse in the evening. After several days of Everest photography, today’s pace is more relaxed, allowing time to rest and prepare for the upcoming Namtso Lake astrophotography session.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Qiangtang Grassland, Tibetan wildlife, alpine lakes, snow mountains, Siling Lake, highland road scenery, northern Tibet wilderness, and Milky Way photography.

Today you will enter the vast Qiangtang Grassland, one of the most remote and open landscapes in Tibet.

After breakfast, depart from Shigatse for a long drive across the plateau. The scenery gradually changes from valleys and villages to endless grasslands, mountains, and wilderness areas.

Along the way, you may see yaks, sheep, and occasionally Tibetan antelopes and other wildlife. Snow mountains and open plains create strong highland landscape photography opportunities.

A short stop may be arranged near natural hot springs for rest and photography.

Continue deeper into the northern Tibet plateau, where lakes and vast grasslands appear along the route.

Arrive at Siling Lake, the largest lake in Tibet. The wide lake surface and surrounding mountains create ideal conditions for landscape and telephoto photography.

In the evening, arrive in Bangor, where clear skies and very low light pollution make it one of the best locations for Milky Way photography.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Qiangtang Grassland, Bamu Tso, Tibetan antelopes and yaks, Namtso Lake, Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, Tashi Dor Peninsula, prayer flags, sunset over Namtso, and Milky Way photography.

After breakfast, depart from Bangor and continue crossing the vast northern Tibet grasslands. Along the way, you will see herds of yaks scattered across the open landscape, and, on clear days, Tibetan antelopes may appear in the distance.

Pass by Bamu Tso, a clear alpine lake surrounded by grasslands and snow mountains, ideal for landscape and eco photography.

Continue to Namtso Lake, one of the most famous sacred lakes in Tibet. The lake lies beneath the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, creating one of the most iconic high-altitude scenery combinations.

In the afternoon, explore Tashi Dor Peninsula, where you can photograph lake views, snow mountains, prayer flags, and the vast shoreline of Namtso Lake.

At sunset, the lake and mountains are covered in warm golden light, creating soft and dramatic highland colors ideal for landscape photography.

Overnight near Namtso Lake. With high altitude, clear air, and almost no light pollution, this is one of the best locations in Tibet for astrophotography and Milky Way photography.

If weather permits, you will photograph the Milky Way over Namtso Lake, capturing lake reflections, starry skies, and Himalayan night landscapes.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Namtso Lake sunrise, lake reflections, Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, highland morning light, prayer flags by the lake, Tibetan plateau road scenery, and northern Tibet landscape.

Early in the morning, photograph the sunrise over Namtso Lake. On clear days, the first light slowly illuminates the lake surface and the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, turning the water into different shades of blue. This is one of the most beautiful moments at Namtso for photography.

The calm morning conditions are ideal for capturing lake reflections, snow mountains, and prayer flags along the shoreline. If conditions allow, you may also continue short shooting sessions of sunrise light and morning atmosphere.

After breakfast, depart from Namtso Lake and return to Lhasa. The route passes through the vast northern Tibet plateau, with opportunities to photograph grasslands, snow mountains, and highland roads along the way depending on light and weather conditions.

Arrive in Lhasa in the afternoon and conclude your Tibet Milky Way and landscape photography tour.
