8 Days Tibet Photography Tour: Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake & Everest Base Camp

Welcome to Tibet!

Upon arrival in Lhasa (3650m), your guide will meet you at the airport or train station and transfer you to your hotel for check-in.

This is your first day at high altitude, so the main focus is rest and acclimatization. We recommend avoiding strenuous activity and taking time to adjust to the environment.

Lhasa is often surprisingly calm and bright, with clear air and strong sunlight that create a unique highland atmosphere.

If you feel well in the evening, you may visit the Potala Palace area for night photography. The illuminated palace is one of the most iconic scenes in Lhasa.

You can also explore the nearby old town area, where prayer flags, local life, and warm city lights create a relaxed introduction to Tibetan culture.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Potala Palace sunrise, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street street photography, Sera Monastery monk debating, and Potala Palace night view.

Today begins your full day of Lhasa cultural and documentary photography.

In the morning, head to the Potala Palace area for sunrise photography. Under clear highland light, the white walls and golden rooftops stand out sharply against the blue sky, creating one of the most iconic views of Lhasa.

If conditions allow, you may also capture reflections and city light contrasts in the early morning atmosphere.

Continue to Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, the cultural heart of Lhasa. Pilgrims walking in kora, elderly locals holding prayer beads, traditional shops, and fluttering prayer flags create a strong Tibetan cultural scene.

Barkhor Street is ideal for street and documentary photography, with constantly changing light and daily life scenes.

In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery to photograph the famous monk debating session. The movement, gestures, and rhythm of the debates make it one of the most dynamic religious photography scenes in Tibet.

The monastery environment, including white walls, old trees, and prayer flags, also offers great opportunities for detail and atmosphere shots.

In the evening, return to Potala Palace Square or nearby viewpoints for night photography. When illuminated, the palace presents a completely different atmosphere under the night sky.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Manla Reservoir, highland road photography, snow mountains, lake reflections, and distant view of Gyantse Dzong.

After breakfast, depart from Lhasa and begin your journey toward Shigatse, entering the core highland landscape photography region of Tibet.

Cross the Kampa La Pass, where you will have your first panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake. The lake changes color depending on light and weather conditions, creating different shades of blue that contrast beautifully with surrounding snow mountains. Short stops along the road allow for photography of lakes, grasslands, and nomadic scenery.

Continue to Karola Glacier, one of the most accessible glaciers in Tibet. The massive ice formation descending from the mountains creates a powerful visual contrast with the surrounding landscape, especially under clear light conditions.

Pass by Manla Reservoir, where calm waters and distant mountains create ideal conditions for lake and telephoto landscape photography.

Along the way, you may also see Gyantse Dzong in the distance, a historic fortress located on a hilltop, offering strong cultural and historical elements for photography.

In the afternoon, continue your drive to Shigatse for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Tashilhunpo Monastery, morning light and pilgrims, highland road photography, Gyawu La Pass panoramic views, Himalayan snow peaks, Mount Everest sunset, and Everest Base Camp landscape photography.

In the early morning, visit the back area of Tashilhunpo Monastery for sunrise photography. As soft light spreads across the golden rooftops, the monastery appears peaceful and majestic. From the upper viewpoints, you can capture layered architecture and the landscape of Shigatse.

Along the monastery kora path, you will often see local pilgrims walking slowly with prayer wheels. Morning light passing through prayer flags and walls creates strong Tibetan cultural atmosphere for photography.

After leaving Shigatse, begin the drive toward Everest region. The landscape gradually changes into open grasslands, river valleys, and snow mountains. You may also encounter yaks, villages, and distant Himalayan peaks along the route.

Enter Everest National Park and continue along the famous mountain road. The winding highway combined with snow peaks creates classic highland travel photography scenes.

Arrive at Gyawu La Pass, one of the best viewpoints to see multiple 8000-meter peaks, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. On clear days, the panoramic view of the Himalayas is extremely impressive.

Continue to Everest Base Camp. In the evening, photograph Mount Everest sunset (Golden Light) as the mountain gradually turns golden under the fading sunlight.

If conditions allow, night photography of the Milky Way over Mount Everest is possible, creating one of the most iconic scenes in Tibet photography.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Rongbuk Monastery, Mount Everest, Everest sunrise (Golden Light), Everest Base Camp landscapes, Himalayan snow mountains, prayer flags, and Milky Way over Everest.

Today you will spend a full day at the Everest Base Camp region for in-depth photography.

In the morning, visit Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world. Located at the foot of Mount Everest, it offers a powerful composition of prayer flags, chortens, and the towering Himalayan peak.

Under clear morning light, the monastery and surrounding snow mountains create ideal conditions for cultural and landscape photography.

Continue exploring the Everest Base Camp area, where Mount Everest appears directly in front of you on clear days. The changing light reveals different layers of the mountain, glaciers, and high-altitude terrain.

In the evening, photograph the famous Mount Everest sunset (Golden Light). As the sun sets, the mountain gradually turns golden, creating one of the most iconic scenes in Tibet.

After sunset, if weather conditions are good, continue with Milky Way photography over Mount Everest. With almost no light pollution and extremely clear skies, this is one of the best locations in the world for astrophotography.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Everest morning light, Dingri wetlands, distant Everest views, highland lakes and grasslands, snow mountain landscapes, and Tibetan plateau scenery.

If weather permits, you may photograph Mount Everest sunrise once again in the early morning. The changing light reveals different moods of the mountain, from cold blue tones to warm highlights.

After breakfast, leave the Everest region and head toward Tingri. The landscape gradually transitions from high-altitude wilderness to wider valleys, wetlands, and grasslands, offering softer and more layered scenery.

On the way, visit the Dingri viewpoint area for distant views of Mount Everest and surrounding Himalayan peaks. Compared with the close-up view from Base Camp, this perspective is more open and peaceful, with grasslands and rivers adding depth to the composition.

In suitable seasons, you may also encounter black-necked cranes and other highland wildlife in the wetlands, making this area ideal for nature and landscape photography.

Continue to Shigatse, with a visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery in the afternoon. The monastery is one of the most important religious sites in Tibet and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama.

Its massive architecture, golden rooftops, and hillside layout make it ideal for architectural and cultural photography. Around the monastery, pilgrims performing kora and prostrations create strong documentary photography scenes.

Please respect monastery rules inside the halls and avoid using cameras indoors.

After the visit, continue to your hotel in Shigatse for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Yarlung Tsangpo River valley, Tibetan villages, highland landscapes, grasslands, and sunset photography along the Lhasa River valley.

After breakfast, depart from Shigatse and drive back to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley. Today’s journey is relaxed, allowing you to reflect on the past days of Everest and western Tibet photography.

Along the way, the landscape continues to feature rivers, grasslands, snow mountains, and traditional Tibetan villages. The Yarlung Tsangpo River flows gently through the valley, creating a classic Tibetan plateau scenery.

Depending on weather and light conditions, you may stop for short photography sessions along the route, capturing highland roads, nomadic areas, and yaks grazing across open fields.

In the afternoon, arrive in Lhasa. You may enjoy free time or continue optional photography at Barkhor Street, Jokhang Temple, or the Potala Palace area at sunset.

This marks the final stage of your Everest photography journey, with a relaxed evening in Lhasa.
