8 Days Shoton Festival Photography Tour: Lhasa, Nagqu Grassland & Namtso Lake

Welcome to Tibet!

Upon arrival in Lhasa, your guide will meet you at the airport or train station and assist with luggage handling. You will then be transferred to your hotel for check-in.

On the way to the city, you can enjoy views of highland valleys, snow mountains, and the vast Tibetan landscape. The clear blue sky and open plateau scenery are often the first impression of Tibet for many travelers.

As this is your first day at high altitude, no photography activities are arranged. The focus today is on rest and acclimatization.

We recommend resting well after check-in, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding strenuous activity to help your body adjust.

If you feel well, you may take a short walk near your hotel to experience the peaceful atmosphere of Lhasa. In the evening, the city lights create a calm and beautiful introduction to your photography journey in Tibet.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Potala Palace, Lhasa city light and architecture, Jokhang Temple cultural photography, Barkhor Street street scenes, Tibetan traditional life, architectural details, and evening Potala Palace night view.

After acclimatization on Day 1, today focuses on cultural and street photography in Lhasa.

In the morning, visit the Potala Palace area for photography. Soft morning light highlights the white walls and golden roofs, making it one of the best times to capture classic city views of Lhasa. You can also shoot from different viewpoints such as Potala Palace Square and nearby hill viewpoints.

Continue to Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, the cultural center of Lhasa. This area is always active with pilgrims performing kora and locals visiting for daily life and worship.

Walking through Barkhor Street, you can photograph prayer wheels, traditional clothing, old stone streets, incense smoke, and everyday street life in Lhasa.

In the afternoon, continue street photography around Barkhor Street, including teahouses, small shops, and daily life scenes under soft light.

In the evening, depending on weather conditions, you may photograph the night view of Potala Palace, which offers a completely different atmosphere under city lights.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Shoton Festival Thangka unveiling, Drepung Monastery, Tibetan pilgrimage scenes, festival documentary photography, monastic life, and Sera Monastery monk debating.

Today you will depart early for Drepung Monastery, the main location for the Shoton Festival’s most important event.

The Shoton Festival is one of Tibet’s biggest traditional celebrations, attracting large numbers of local pilgrims who come to pray and take part in religious activities.

Arriving early allows better positioning for photography around the monastery hillside. As the light becomes softer in the morning, you can capture pilgrims walking up the mountain, performing prostrations, and carrying prayer flags, creating strong documentary photography scenes.

Later, the giant Thangka (sacred Buddhist painting) is displayed on the hillside, one of the most iconic moments of the festival and a key highlight for photography.

At Drepung Monastery, you can also photograph monastery architecture, monks’ daily activities, traditional costumes, and the festive atmosphere of the event.

In the afternoon, return to Lhasa and continue to Sera Monastery to photograph the famous monk debating sessions.

Monks engage in lively philosophical debates using hand gestures, clapping, and rapid questioning. The scene is highly dynamic and ideal for documentary and street-style photography.

In the evening, if time allows, continue street photography around Barkhor Street, where festival crowds, pilgrims, teahouses, and night scenes create a rich cultural atmosphere in Lhasa’s old town.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Norbulingka Tibetan opera, Shoton Festival cultural scenes, Tibetan family gatherings, traditional costumes, environmental portrait photography, and Lhasa old town street photography.

Today you continue exploring the Shoton Festival, focusing on the cultural and leisure atmosphere of Norbulingka Palace.

Compared with the dramatic Thangka unveiling at Drepung Monastery, Norbulingka offers a more relaxed and festive environment.

During the Shoton Festival, local Tibetan families gather here to set up tents, enjoy picnics, and watch traditional Tibetan opera performances. The whole park is filled with a strong festival atmosphere.

You can photograph Tibetan opera actors in colorful costumes and masks, as well as local people dressed in traditional attire enjoying the festival. This location is ideal for documentary photography and environmental portraits.

In summer, Norbulingka is full of greenery and soft light, creating strong contrast with the typical high-altitude landscapes of Tibet. It is a great location for capturing the combination of nature, culture, and people.

In the afternoon, return to Lhasa old town for free street photography around Barkhor Street, Jokhang Temple, and nearby alleys. You can capture pilgrims, teahouses, traditional shops, and the lively festival atmosphere in the city.

In the evening, you may continue photographing Potala Palace night views and the illuminated city of Lhasa.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Northern Tibet grasslands, summer yaks and sheep, nomadic tents, highland road photography, snow mountains and alpine meadows, dramatic cloud light, and sunset over the grassland.

Today you leave Lhasa and head north into the vast Nagqu grasslands, entering one of the most open and remote landscapes in Tibet.

As the altitude increases, the scenery gradually changes from valleys and settlements to endless grasslands and snow mountains. Summer is the most colorful season in Nagqu, with green meadows, grazing yaks and sheep, and shifting highland clouds.

Along the way, you can stop for photography whenever light and weather conditions allow. Nomadic tents, herding scenes, and highland roads offer strong opportunities for documentary and landscape photography.

In Nagqu grasslands, you will focus on photographing wide open landscapes, nomadic life, and the natural rhythm of the plateau. Compared with southern Tibet, this region feels more vast, raw, and untouched.

At sunset, the grasslands often show dramatic light changes. On clear days, snow mountains, meadows, and evening clouds combine to create classic highland photography scenes.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Namtso Lake, Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, lake reflections, Tashi Dor Peninsula, prayer flags, mani stones, Tibetan plateau grasslands, and highland sunset photography.

Continue your journey across the vast northern Tibet plateau, passing endless grasslands where yaks, sheep, nomadic tents, and snow mountains appear along the route.

The open landscapes and changing light conditions offer excellent opportunities for wide-angle and travel photography.

Arrive at Namtso Lake, one of the most famous sacred lakes in Tibet. The lake’s clear blue water, combined with the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, creates one of the most iconic highland landscapes in Tibet.

At the lakeshore, you can photograph prayer flags, mani stone piles, pilgrims, and constantly changing light over the water. On clear days, snow mountain reflections can be seen on the lake surface.

In the evening, leave Namtso Lake and continue to Damxung. Along the way, you may capture grassland sunset scenes and golden light over the plateau.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Damxung grassland morning light, Tibetan nomadic life, yaks and sheep herds, highland road photography, alpine meadows, dramatic cloud light, and plateau landscape scenes.

Today you begin the return journey from the northern Tibet grasslands back to Lhasa.

In the early morning, the Damxung grasslands offer soft light and calm conditions. On clear days, you can photograph grazing yaks, open meadows, and distant snow mountains under changing sky conditions.

After breakfast, drive along the Qinghai–Tibet Highway back to Lhasa. Along the route, you will pass vast grasslands and nomadic areas, with opportunities for short stops depending on light and weather.

The summer plateau often features dynamic cloud formations, creating strong light and shadow contrasts across the landscape. This is ideal for atmospheric and travel photography.

In the afternoon, arrive in Lhasa. You may continue optional street photography in Barkhor Street or visit Potala Palace for sunset and night photography, marking the final stage of your Tibet photography journey.

After breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the airport or train station according to your schedule, marking the end of your Tibet photography tour.

During this journey, you have captured Tibet’s festival culture, northern grasslands, sacred lakes, and snow mountain landscapes. You have also experienced both the cultural life of Lhasa and the vast natural scenery of the Tibetan plateau.
