10 Days Tibet Photography Tour: Nyingchi, Lhasa & Everest Scenic Journey

Today’s Photography Highlights: Nyingchi River Valley, Lamaling Monastery, southeastern Tibetan forests, and Niyang River sunset.

Welcome to Tibet!

Today you arrive in Nyingchi, often called the “Switzerland of Tibet,” and begin your photography journey from the forests of southeastern Tibet toward the Everest region.

Upon arrival, your guide will meet you at the airport or train station and transfer you to your hotel for check-in.

Nyingchi sits at around 3,000 meters above sea level, with a relatively mild and humid climate, making it an ideal first stop for acclimatization. The landscape here is very different from central Tibet, featuring forests, river valleys, and soft mountain scenery.

If time and conditions allow, you may visit Lamaling Monastery in the afternoon. Located on a hillside surrounded by forest and mist, the monastery offers beautiful views over the Niyang River Valley, especially under soft afternoon light.

In the evening, you may also enjoy photography along the Niyang River, where seasonal changes bring different landscapes - from peach blossoms in spring to lush green forests in summer and golden colors in autumn.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Mount Namcha Barwa, Sejila Pass viewpoint, Lulang Forest Sea, alpine clouds, and southeastern Tibetan forest landscapes.

After breakfast, depart from Nyingchi and drive toward Lulang along the Sichuan–Tibet Highway. As altitude gradually increases, the landscape transitions from river valleys into dense forests, deep gorges, and alpine scenery.

The first major stop is Sejila Pass, one of the most important viewpoints for photographing Mount Namcha Barwa. On clear days, the snow-capped peak rises above layers of clouds and forests, creating a dramatic contrast of light, shadow, and altitude.

Mount Namcha Barwa is often covered by clouds throughout the year and is known as the “most difficult peak to see in Tibet.” If weather conditions allow a full view, it becomes one of the most memorable highlights of the journey.

Continue driving toward Lulang, where the landscape becomes softer and more open, with forests, meadows, streams, and distant snow mountains appearing along the way.

Upon arrival, explore the famous Lulang Forest Sea, where vast alpine forests stretch across valleys and hills. The scenery changes with the seasons:

• Spring: wildflowers and peach blossoms
• Summer: mist and lush greenery
• Autumn: colorful forests
• Winter: quiet snow-covered landscapes

In the evening, there may be another opportunity to see Mount Namcha Barwa under sunset light, when clouds and golden light create a dramatic Himalayan atmosphere.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Lulang morning scenery, forest highway landscapes, Kading Gorge waterfall, canyon light effects, and Basum Tso Lake photography.

In the early morning, if weather permits, you may revisit Lulang Forest Sea for sunrise photography. Morning mist flows through the forest and meadows, with distant snow mountains partially hidden in clouds, creating a calm and atmospheric Tibetan landscape.

After breakfast, depart from Lulang and continue along the Sichuan–Tibet Highway. The route passes through dense forests, river valleys, and Tibetan villages, offering rich and varied southeastern Tibetan scenery.

The first stop is Kading Gorge, a deep canyon known for its dramatic waterfall. Water cascades down between steep cliffs surrounded by dense forest. Sunlight passing through mist and trees creates strong visual contrast, making it ideal for waterfall, forest, and long-exposure photography.

Continue to Basum Tso Lake, one of the most beautiful highland lakes in southeastern Tibet. The lake is known for its clear turquoise water, which changes color depending on weather and light conditions.

Surrounded by snow mountains and dense forests, Basum Tso offers strong reflection scenes, making it one of the most iconic photography locations in the region.

In the evening, soft light over the lake creates ideal conditions for landscape, portrait, and drone photography.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Basum Tso morning scenery, lake reflections, Niyang River valley landscapes, highland highway photography, and Lhasa river sunset views.

In the early morning, enjoy the most peaceful moment at Basum Tso Lake. On clear days, the lake surface becomes mirror-like, reflecting snow mountains, forests, and temples. Morning mist drifting across the water creates a calm and pure atmosphere, ideal for landscape photography.

After breakfast, depart from Basum Tso and drive toward Lhasa along the Niyang River Valley. The route offers a continuous transition of scenery, from dense forests and river valleys to wide-open plateau landscapes.

The Niyang River, known as one of the most beautiful rivers in Tibet, flows through green valleys with crystal-clear blue-green water. Along the way, you will pass villages, grasslands, and distant snow mountains, making it ideal for road trip and travel photography.

As altitude gradually increases, the landscape becomes more open and expansive, marking the transition from southeastern Tibet into the central plateau region.

In the afternoon, arrive in Lhasa. If time and weather permit, you may photograph sunset or evening scenes around the Potala Palace or Lhasa River, where the city lights gradually illuminate the night skyline.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Potala Palace sunrise, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street street photography, Sera Monastery debate, and Potala Palace night view.

Today focuses on Lhasa’s cultural and street photography.

In the early morning, head to the Potala Palace viewpoint for sunrise photography. Under clear highland light, the palace stands out sharply against the blue sky, with its white walls and golden roofs glowing in the morning sun.

When conditions are good, reflections and soft morning light around the palace area also create strong visual opportunities for landscape and architectural photography.

Continue to Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism. Pilgrims walking clockwise, elderly devotees with prayer beads, traditional shops, and fluttering prayer flags together create a strong cultural atmosphere.

Barkhor Street is ideal for documentary and street photography, where changing light and movement bring constant visual variation.

In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery to photograph the famous monk debate sessions. The debates are energetic and expressive, featuring hand clapping, gestures, and rapid exchanges, making it one of the most dynamic forms of Tibetan cultural photography.

The monastery environment - white walls, old trees, and prayer flags - also provides strong background composition for detail shots.

In the evening, return to Potala Palace or its surrounding viewpoints for night photography. As the lights gradually turn on, the palace transforms into a completely different atmosphere compared to daytime.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Yamdrok Lake panorama, Karola Glacier, Manla Reservoir, highland highway landscapes, snow mountain reflections, and distant views of Gyantse Dzong.

After breakfast, depart from Lhasa and drive toward Shigatse, entering the core landscape region of central Tibet.

The first major stop is Gampala Pass, where you can overlook the full panorama of Yamdrok Lake. The lake changes color depending on light and weather, shifting between deep blue and turquoise tones. Surrounded by snow mountains and vast plateau ridges, it is one of Tibet’s most iconic landscape photography locations.

Continue to Karola Glacier, where massive ice formations descend directly from the mountain slopes. In clear weather, the contrast between the glacier and the highway creates strong visual impact for landscape photography.

Next, pass by Manla Reservoir, a calm highland lake surrounded by mountains. The still water and distant snow peaks make it ideal for telephoto landscape compositions.

Along the route, you will also catch a distant view of Gyantse Dzong, a historic fortress built on a hilltop, adding cultural depth to the journey.

In the afternoon, continue through the plateau landscapes before arriving in Shigatse.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Tashilhunpo Monastery sunrise, prayer wheel pilgrims, Gawula Pass Himalayan panorama, Everest Highway landscapes, and Everest sunset photography.

In the early morning, visit the hillside behind Tashilhunpo Monastery for sunrise photography. As soft light spreads across the golden rooftops, the monastery appears calm and sacred under the morning mist, making it ideal for architectural and cultural photography.

Along the kora route, you can often see local pilgrims walking clockwise with prayer wheels. The combination of morning light, prayer flags, and monastery walls creates a strong Tibetan cultural atmosphere.

Afterward, depart from Shigatse and drive toward the Everest region. The route passes through highland valleys, rivers, and snow mountains, offering continuous opportunities for landscape photography along the way.

Enter Everest National Park and follow the famous Everest Highway, where winding roads cut through vast plateau landscapes and snow-capped peaks.

In the afternoon, arrive at Gawula Pass, one of the best viewpoints in the region. On clear days, multiple 8000-meter peaks can be seen at once, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, forming a dramatic Himalayan panorama.

Continue to Everest Base Camp. In the evening, sunset light gradually illuminates the summit of Mount Everest, creating the iconic golden glow known as Everest Sunset. Prayer flags, stone cairns, and the high-altitude landscape together create a powerful and quiet atmosphere.

If weather conditions are favorable, night photography of the Milky Way over Everest is also possible.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Rongbuk Monastery, Mount Everest, Everest Golden Sunrise, Everest Milky Way, and Everest Base Camp landscapes.

Today is a full-day photography session at Everest Base Camp, focusing on different light conditions of Mount Everest from sunrise to night.

In the morning, visit Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world. Located at the foot of Mount Everest, it offers a powerful composition of prayer flags, white stupas, and the massive north face of Everest in the background, making it ideal for both cultural and landscape photography.

Continue shooting around Everest Base Camp, where changing light conditions reveal different textures of the mountain and surrounding glacier landscapes. The high-altitude plateau, stone cairns, and prayer flags together create a vast and silent Himalayan atmosphere.

In the evening, capture the iconic Everest Sunset, when the summit gradually turns golden under the setting sun, creating one of the most dramatic mountain light scenes in the Himalayas.

After dark, if weather conditions allow, continue with Milky Way photography over Mount Everest. Due to minimal light pollution and high altitude, the night sky here is exceptionally clear, making it one of the best stargazing locations in Tibet.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Everest morning light, Dingri wetlands, Siling Viewpoint of Everest, and Himalayan snow mountain landscapes.

If weather conditions are clear, the morning offers another chance to photograph Mount Everest at sunrise. As the first light appears, the peak gradually shifts from deep blue tones to soft golden light, revealing a completely different atmosphere from sunset photography.

After breakfast, depart from the Everest region toward Dingri. Compared to the rugged Everest Highway, the landscape becomes softer, with wetlands, river valleys, and grasslands gradually replacing the high-altitude wilderness.

Along the way, snow mountains, villages, and pastoral scenes appear continuously, offering strong opportunities for both landscape and documentary photography.

Stop at the Dingjie Siling Viewpoint, one of the best locations in Dingri for photographing Mount Everest from a distance. Here, Everest appears calm and massive, surrounded by wetlands and open plateau scenery, creating a layered and peaceful composition.

If the season is suitable, you may also encounter black-necked cranes and other highland wildlife in the wetland areas.

In the afternoon, arrive at Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse for photography. As one of the most important monasteries in Tibetan Buddhism, it features large-scale architecture built along the hillside, with golden roofs, white walls, and prayer flags stretching across the slope.

Inside the monastery, pilgrims can often be seen turning prayer wheels, reciting mantras, and performing full-body prostrations, creating a strong sense of living Tibetan culture and religious devotion.

Please follow monastery rules and do not use cameras inside restricted halls.

After the visit, stay overnight in Shigatse.

After breakfast, depart from Shigatse and drive back to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River Valley. The journey offers a relaxed final day, allowing time to reflect on the full photography experience from the forests of Nyingchi to the snow mountains of Everest.

Along the way, the landscape continues to feature plateau grasslands, river valleys, distant snow peaks, and Tibetan villages, forming a classic central Tibet scenery corridor.

Depending on light and weather conditions, stops will be made for highland road photography, pastoral landscapes, and nomadic scenes, with changing skies adding atmosphere to the journey.

Upon arrival in Lhasa, transfer to Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station according to your departure schedule, marking the end of this tour.
