11 Days Tibet Ngari South Route Photography Tour: Everest, Mount Kailash & Guge Kingdom

Welcome to Tibet!

Upon arrival in Lhasa, your guide will meet you at the airport or train station and transfer you to your hotel for check-in.

The drive into the city offers your first views of the Tibetan landscape, including river valleys, open skies, and high-altitude scenery. Many travelers are immediately struck by the clarity of the air and the vastness of the plateau.

As this is your first day at altitude, the main focus is region and acclimatization. Please avoid strenuous activity and allow your body to adjust gradually.

If you feel well, you may take a light walk around the hotel area and experience the calm atmosphere of Lhasa. The city becomes especially beautiful in the evening, with illuminated views of Potala Palace creating a classic first impression of Tibet.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Manla Reservoir, highland road photography, snow mountain reflections, distant view of Gyantse Fortress, and golden-hour plateau landscapes.

After breakfast, depart from Lhasa and head toward Shigatse, officially entering the main high-altitude photography route of Tibet.

Cross the Gampala Pass, where you will enjoy a panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake. The lake changes color depending on light and weather, ranging from deep blue to turquoise, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and vast plateau landscapes.

Continue to Karola Glacier, one of the most iconic roadside glaciers in Tibet. The massive ice tongue descending from the mountain creates a powerful contrast with the surrounding barren landscape.

The journey then passes Manla Reservoir, a quiet alpine lake ideal for photographing reflections of snow mountains and wide plateau scenery.

On the way, you may also see Gyantse Fortress (Gyantse Dzong) from a distance, standing on a hilltop and showcasing strong historical and cultural presence in the region.

Continue driving through the plateau landscape and arrive in Shigatse for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Tashilhunpo Monastery, morning prayer and circumambulation scenes, highland grasslands, wildlife photography (black-necked cranes & wild donkeys), and scenic views along G318 National Highway.

Early in the morning, visit the back hillside of Tashilhunpo Monastery for panoramic photography. Under the first light of day, the monastery’s golden rooftops and white walls stand out clearly against the mountains and Shigatse city.

Along the kora path, local pilgrims can be seen walking and chanting while turning prayer wheels. The combination of morning light, prayer flags, and traditional devotion creates strong opportunities for documentary and street-style photography.

After the visit, depart Shigatse and head toward the western Tibet direction. Pass through Lhatse County, known for its traditional Tibetan knife craftsmanship, with landscapes gradually opening into vast grasslands and river valleys.

On clear days, there is a chance to see black-necked cranes and wild donkeys along the plateau, especially in open wetland areas.

Along the route, you may also stop at Lang Tso Lake, a lesser-known highland lake with clear blue water and wide open surroundings, ideal for drone and landscape photography.

Continue along the G318 Highway, and pass the iconic 5,000 km milestone marker, marking the transition deeper into western Tibet.

In the evening, arrive in Saga for overnight stay. Saga serves as an important gateway town for travelers heading toward Mount Kailash and the Ngari region, where the landscape becomes increasingly remote and dramatic.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Zhongba sand dunes, Tibetan antelope & wild donkeys, Mayum La Pass (5211m), Lake Rakshastal sunset, and Mount Kailash & Naimona’nyi views.

After breakfast, depart from Saga and continue west toward the Ngari plateau. The landscape gradually becomes more open and dramatic as you enter deeper into western Tibet.

On the way, pass through the Zhongba sand dunes, where golden desert-like terrain contrasts sharply with distant snow mountains and vast grasslands. This is one of the most unique transitional landscapes along the Ngari South Route.

Continue toward Paryang, crossing open plateau areas where you may encounter Tibetan antelope and wild donkeys along the grasslands and valleys, depending on natural conditions.

Cross the high-altitude Mayum La Pass (5211m), offering wide panoramic views of mountains, rivers, and the vast Tibetan plateau.

In the afternoon, continue toward Lake Rakshastal, also known as the “Ghost Lake”. Compared with nearby Manasarovar, it has a more remote and silent atmosphere. On clear days, you can photograph Mount Kailash and Mount Naimona’nyi reflected in the lake during sunset light.

As the sun sets, the lake, mountains, and drifting clouds turn golden, creating one of the most iconic sacred landscapes in western Tibet.

Arrive in Purang for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Mount Kailash sunrise, Ngari plateau road scenery, Zanda Earth Forest, Mount Kamet views, and earth forest sunset photography.

Early in the morning, head to the viewpoint for Mount Kailash sunrise photography. As the first light appears, the sacred mountain slowly turns golden, with shifting clouds and mist creating a calm and spiritual atmosphere.

After shooting, depart from Purang and drive toward Zanda (Tsada). The route passes through vast highland landscapes, with grasslands, rivers, and distant snow mountains gradually opening into the wider Ngari plateau.

Along the way, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with wide plateau roads, scattered nomadic tents, and occasional views of yaks and local herders, reflecting the everyday life of western Tibet.

In the afternoon, arrive at the Zanda Earth Forest, one of the most iconic geological landscapes in Ngari. Shaped by long-term erosion, the towering earth formations create a surreal canyon-like world.

From the viewpoint, the earth forest stretches endlessly into the distance, backed by the western Himalayas. On clear days, Mount Kamet can also be seen rising behind the formations, creating a powerful contrast between snow mountains and desert-like terrain.

At sunset, warm golden light covers the entire earth forest, highlighting its textures and layers, making it one of the best photography moments of the day.

After shooting, continue to Zanda (Tsada) for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Guge Kingdom sunrise, ancient ruins and murals, Zanda Earth Forest, Xiayigou canyon photography, and earth forest sunset light.

Early in the morning, head to the Guge Kingdom ruins for sunrise photography. As the first light rises, golden sunlight slowly illuminates the ancient palace ruins and surrounding earth forest, revealing a dramatic and mysterious landscape.

Once the capital of an ancient western Tibetan kingdom, Guge now remains as fragmented palaces, temples, and caves, making it one of the most atmospheric historical photography sites in Ngari.

After sunrise shooting, continue exploring the site on foot if conditions allow. Walking through ancient stairways and ruins, you will pass collapsed walls, cave structures, and layered palace remains - ideal for architectural and cultural photography.

Inside the site, some well-preserved murals still remain, showing delicate Tibetan artistic traditions. (Please note: mural areas are for viewing only and photography may be restricted.)

In the afternoon, head deeper into Zanda Earth Forest National Geopark, toward the quieter and less-visited Xiayigou Canyon.

Xiayigou is known for its rich color variations, ranging from white and yellow to deep red tones. The layered canyon formations create a surreal, almost extraterrestrial landscape shaped by erosion over time.

At sunset, warm light enhances the textures and shadows of the earth forest, making it ideal for wide-angle landscape and geological photography.

After shooting, return to Zanda (Tsada) for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Marang Canyon, ancient Zhangzhung road landscapes, Lake Manasarovar views, Mount Naimona’nyi sunset, plateau canyon photography, and highland wildlife encounters.

After breakfast, depart from Zanda (Tsada) and follow the ancient Zhangzhung route toward Purang. The landscape gradually shifts from earth forests into vast plateaus, deep valleys, and remote canyon systems.

The first highlight is Marang Canyon, a highly original geological landscape with layered rock formations and deep valleys. From elevated viewpoints, the canyon reveals strong natural lines shaped by erosion over time, making it ideal for drone photography and wide-angle landscape shots.

Continue along the route through remote plateau roads, where there is a chance to see Tibetan wild donkeys and Tibetan gazelles in open grassland areas, depending on natural conditions.

In the afternoon, arrive at the Lake Manasarovar region, one of the most sacred lakes in Tibet. The water appears clear and luminous, shifting between blue and green tones under sunlight, with snow mountains reflecting in the distance.

As the day ends, head to a viewpoint to capture the sunset of Mount Naimona’nyi, often referred to as the “Goddess of the Himalayas.” When conditions are clear, golden light spreads across the mountain and lake surface, creating one of the most iconic sacred landscape scenes in western Tibet.

After photography, continue to Purang for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Mount Kailash sunrise, Gongzhu Co Lake, highland snow mountain roads, Zhongba sand dunes, and Maquan River valley landscapes.

Early in the morning, visit a lesser-known viewpoint to photograph the sunrise of Mount Kailash. As the first light appears, the sacred mountain slowly glows in golden tones, while reflections of sky and snow mountains appear in the foreground water channels, creating a calm and pure highland composition.

After sunrise photography, continue the journey eastward. Stop at Gongzhu Co Lake, where clear blue-green waters contrast beautifully with surrounding grasslands and distant snow peaks, making it a classic highland lake photography location along the Ngari South Route.

Cross the Mayum La Pass (around 5,200m), where wide-open views of snow mountains, grasslands, and winding plateau roads reveal the raw wilderness of western Tibet.

Continue through Paryang, where traditional Tibetan villages and grazing livestock appear across open grasslands, gradually transitioning the landscape from harsh wilderness to softer pastoral scenery.

Arrive at Zhongba Sand Dunes for photography. Golden dunes stretch across the plateau, with snow mountains and river valleys in the background, creating a rare desert-like landscape in western Tibet. The nearby Maquan River (upper Yarlung Tsangpo system) adds layered geographical contrast to the scene.

After shooting, continue to Saga for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Peiku Tso Lake, Shishapangma (8012m), Gawula Pass panoramic view of 8000m peaks, Everest Highway landscape, and Mount Everest sunset photography.

After breakfast, depart from Saga and continue toward the Everest region. The landscape gradually becomes more dramatic, with wide valleys, river systems, and distant snow mountains.

The first major stop is Peiku Tso Lake, one of the best viewpoints for photographing Shishapangma (8012m) - the only 8000-meter peak fully located within China. On clear days, the snow mountain reflects beautifully in the lake and surrounding wetlands, creating a layered composition of water, ice, and sky.

Continue along highland roads through vast open terrain, ideal for capturing the western Tibet road trip atmosphere.

Enter the Everest National Nature Reserve and follow the winding Everest Highway, where dramatic switchbacks and distant peaks define the journey.

Arrive at Gawula Pass, one of the most famous viewpoints in the Himalayas. On clear days, you can see five 8000-meter peaks at once: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma. This is one of the most powerful panoramic landscapes in the entire region.

Continue to Everest Base Camp area in the afternoon. At sunset, Mount Everest gradually turns golden as the light shifts across its massive face. Prayer flags, stone piles, and high-altitude winds create a powerful and quiet atmosphere.

After photography, stay overnight at Everest tent camp or Rongbuk Monastery Hotel.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Gawula Pass sunrise over 8000m peaks, Everest Highway landscapes, and Tashilhunpo Monastery architecture & cultural photography.

Before dawn, depart from Everest Base Camp and head to Gawula Pass for sunrise photography. Early morning temperatures are extremely low, but this is one of the best moments to capture the Himalayas at first light.

From the pass, on clear days you can see multiple 8000-meter peaks at once. As the sun rises, Makalu, Lhotse, Mount Everest, and Cho Oyu gradually shift from deep blue tones to golden light, creating a powerful Himalayan panorama.

After sunrise shooting, descend from the Everest region and return toward Shigatse. The journey continues through vast highland valleys, rivers, and snow mountain landscapes, offering continuous opportunities for road and landscape photography.

In the afternoon, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery for architectural and cultural photography. As one of the most important monasteries in Tibet, it features massive structures, golden rooftops, and whitewashed walls spread across the hillside.

Inside the monastery, local pilgrims can often be seen turning prayer wheels and performing traditional prostrations, creating strong documentary photography opportunities.

Please respect monastery rules and avoid photography inside restricted halls.

After the visit, continue to Shigatse for overnight stay.

After breakfast, drive back from Shigatse to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley. The journey passes through highland villages, river landscapes, and distant snow-capped mountains, offering a final look at Tibet’s plateau scenery.

Upon arrival in Lhasa, you will be transferred to Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station according to your departure schedule, marking the end of this Ngari and Everest photography expedition.
