13 Days Tibet Photography Expedition: Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash & Guge Kingdom

Welcome to Tibet!

Upon arrival in Lhasa (3650m), your guide will meet you at the airport or train station and transfer you to your hotel for check-in.

The drive into the city offers your first views of the Tibetan landscape, including river valleys, open skies, and distant mountains. Many travelers are immediately struck by the clear air and bright highland light.

As this is your first day at altitude, the main focus is rest and acclimatization. We recommend avoiding strenuous activity and taking time to adjust gradually.

If you feel well in the evening, you may take a light walk around the city. The atmosphere in Lhasa is calm and distinctive, especially around traditional streets and illuminated buildings.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Yamdrok Lake, Kampa La Pass, Karola Glacier, Manla Reservoir, highland road photography, snow mountains, lake reflections, and Gyantse Dzong views.

After breakfast, depart from Lhasa and head toward Shigatse, entering the main highland landscape photography route.

Cross Kampa La Pass, where you will get your first panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake. The lake changes color depending on light and weather, creating rich blue tones against surrounding snow mountains. Short stops along the road allow photography of grasslands, yaks, and alpine scenery.

Continue to Karola Glacier, where massive ice formations descend dramatically from the mountains. Under clear light, the glacier creates strong contrast with the surrounding plateau landscape.

Pass by Manla Reservoir, a calm alpine lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks, ideal for wide-angle and telephoto landscape photography.

Along the route, you may also see Gyantse Dzong in the distance, a historic fortress on a hilltop that adds cultural depth to the landscape.

In the afternoon, continue the drive to Shigatse for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Tashilhunpo Monastery sunrise, monastery kora path, Gyawu La Pass Himalayan panorama, Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Everest highway landscape, and Everest sunset (Golden Light).

After breakfast, depart from Shigatse and head toward the Everest region, entering the core high-altitude photography zone.

Before leaving, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery for early morning photography. The golden rooftops and hillside layout create strong visual depth, while pilgrims walking the kora path add rich cultural elements to the scene.

Continue along the China–Nepal Highway, passing grasslands, river valleys, and snow-capped mountains. The road itself offers classic highland travel photography opportunities.

Arrive at Gyawu La Pass, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Mount Everest and surrounding Himalayan peaks on clear days, including Lhotse, Makalu, and other 8000-meter mountains.

In the afternoon, continue toward Everest Base Camp, with chances to photograph Mount Everest, Lhotse, and the surrounding glacier landscapes as the light changes.

At sunset, capture the iconic Everest Golden Light, when the mountain gradually turns golden under evening sunlight.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Everest sunrise, Rongbuk Monastery, Shishapangma mountain range, Peiku Tso reflections, and Tibetan plateau wilderness landscapes.

In the early morning, photograph the sunrise over Mount Everest. As the first light touches the summit, the mountain gradually shifts from deep blue tones to golden light, creating one of the most iconic scenes in Everest photography.

Continue to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world. With prayer flags, stone walls, and Everest in the background, it offers strong cultural and landscape photography opportunities.

Afterwards, begin the journey into the vast Ngari plateau region. Along the way, you will pass Shishapangma (8027m), the only 8000-meter peak entirely within China. On clear days, the full mountain range appears with strong depth and layering.

Weather and light conditions will determine stops for photography, with opportunities to capture different perspectives of Shishapangma and surrounding peaks.

Continue to Peiku Tso, a stunning high-altitude lake known for its mirror-like reflections of snow mountains. On clear days, the lake, mountains, and sky create a powerful composition ideal for wide-angle and telephoto photography.

In the afternoon, continue driving to Saga for overnight stay. The route passes through vast plateaus, river valleys, and open wilderness landscapes, offering continuous highland scenery throughout the journey.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Paryang sand dunes, distant Annapurna range, highland lakes, wildlife (Tibetan antelope & wild donkeys), Lake Manasarovar & Rakshastal sunset, and Mount Naimona’nyi views.

After breakfast, continue driving west into the vast Ngari Plateau, where the landscape becomes increasingly remote and wild, with open grasslands, rivers, and mountains stretching endlessly.

On the way to Paryang, stop at a viewpoint to photograph the distant Annapurna mountain range. Below the snow peaks lies the unique Paryang sand dunes, where desert, river valley, and Himalayan scenery meet in one frame.

Crossing the Zhongba grasslands and Mayum La Pass (5211m), you officially enter the Ngari region. This area is known for its wide-open plateau and occasional sightings of wild yaks, Tibetan antelope, and wild donkeys, depending on weather and conditions.

Continue to Gung Co (Lake) for a short stop. The lake changes color under different light conditions, blending with surrounding snow mountains and grassland landscapes.

In the evening, arrive at the sacred lake region of Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal. When weather permits, you may photograph the sunset light over Mount Naimona’nyi, with contrasting colors between the two lakes and surrounding barren mountains.

After photography, continue to Darchen (Tarchen) for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Mount Kailash sunrise, Ngari sacred landscapes, Tholing ruins (Zhangzhung civilization), ancient Guge cultural routes, and Zanda earth forest sunset photography.

In the early morning, head to the viewpoint to photograph the sunrise of Mount Kailash. As the first light appears, the sacred mountain gradually turns golden, with changing clouds and light creating a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.

After breakfast, depart for Zanda (Tsada). On the way, visit the Tholing Monastery ruins and ancient Zhangzhung (Xiangxiong) civilization sites, once an important center of western Tibet culture.

The site is built along the hillside, overlooking river valleys and desert-like landscapes. Colorful earth formations, ancient cave ruins, and the flowing Langchen Tsangpo River create a strong sense of history and atmosphere.

Continue through the ancient Zhangzhung kingdom region, where vast plateaus and dramatic landscapes gradually transition into the unique terrain of western Tibet.

In the afternoon, explore the Zanda Earth Forest, one of the most iconic landscapes in Ngari. Formed by centuries of erosion, the towering earth pillars create a surreal, layered desert-like scenery.

At sunset, the warm light enhances the textures and shadows of the earth forest, making it ideal for wide-angle landscape and geological photography.

After shooting, continue to Zanda (Tsada) for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Guge Kingdom sunrise, ancient ruins and murals, Zanda Earth Forest, Xiayigou canyon photography, and earth forest sunset light.

Early in the morning, head to the Guge Kingdom ruins for sunrise photography. As the first light spreads across the ancient structures and surrounding earth forest, the entire site appears quiet, mysterious, and dramatic.

The Guge Kingdom was once a powerful ancient civilization in western Tibet. Today, only the remains of palaces, temples, and caves remain, creating one of the most atmospheric historical photography sites in Ngari.

After sunrise shooting, you may explore the upper parts of the ruins on foot. Along the ancient pathways, collapsed walls, cave structures, and palace remains create strong visual layers, ideal for architectural and cultural photography.

Inside the site, some well-preserved murals can still be seen, showing traditional Tibetan artistic styles. (Please note: mural areas are for viewing only and photography may be restricted.)

In the afternoon, continue into the Zanda Earth Forest National Geopark, and explore the lesser-known Xiayigou Canyon, a quiet and less-visited area with very few tourists.

Xiayigou is known for its rich earth colors, ranging from white and yellow to deep red. The canyon formations create a surreal landscape that feels almost otherworldly, especially under changing light conditions.

At sunset, the warm light enhances the textures and layers of the earth forest, making it ideal for wide-angle landscape and geological photography.

After shooting, return to Zanda (Tsada) for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Zanda Earth Forest morning light, Mount Kamet distant views, Mount Kailash & Naimona’nyi perspectives, highland wilderness roads, Changthang wildlife, Tibetan wild ass and Tibetan antelope.

After breakfast, depart from Zanda (Tsada) and begin the journey toward the eastern Ngari region. Before leaving, stop at a viewpoint to capture the dramatic contrast between Mount Kamet and the Zanda Earth Forest, where snow mountains rise above deep canyon-like formations.

Continue along the plateau road, where the landscape gradually opens into vast wilderness. This route is part of the transition toward the Changthang highlands, known for its remote and untouched environment.

Along the way, you may encounter Tibetan wild ass, Tibetan antelope, and other plateau wildlife freely moving across the grasslands. The open terrain and shifting light make this section ideal for nature and road photography.

Cross high passes such as Longgalada Pass (5166m), where wide panoramic views reveal snow mountains, grasslands, and endless highland sky.

Continue driving along sections of G219 National Highway, with possible stops to photograph Mount Kailash and Mount Naimona’nyi when visibility is good. On clear days, both sacred peaks can be seen standing across the vast plateau landscape.

In the afternoon, enter a more remote wilderness area of western Tibet. This region retains a raw, untouched atmosphere, with open grasslands, long roads, and dramatic light changes throughout the day.

Arrive in Yare (or Rutog region) for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Rinchen Shubtso, Zabuye Salt Lake, Changthang wilderness landscapes, highland lakes, wildlife photography, and remote plateau road scenery.

After breakfast, leave Yare and enter the famous “one lake after another” (Yi Cuo Zai Cuo) route in western Tibet. Today’s journey crosses the vast Changthang wilderness, one of the most remote regions on the plateau.

Along the way, numerous high-altitude lakes appear continuously across the landscape. Under changing light and clouds, the lakes shift between deep blue, turquoise, and green tones, creating some of the most iconic “Tibet blue” scenery.

The drive itself offers constant photography opportunities, with snow mountains, open grasslands, and endless plateau roads forming a strong sense of scale and wilderness atmosphere. This section is also ideal for drone photography, weather permitting.

After passing Rinchen Shubtso, arrive at one of the most beautiful lakes in the region. Known for its pure and untouched scenery, the lake reflects surrounding snow peaks and open sky, creating a calm and expansive composition.

Continue to Zabuye Salt Lake, a unique high-altitude salt lake known for its layered colors and mineral textures. Under sunlight, the lake surface changes tone dramatically, contrasting strongly with the surrounding barren landscape.

On clear days, the still water can reflect the sky and clouds, creating a mirror-like effect often described as a “sky on the plateau.”

Along the route, there is also a chance to see Tibetan antelope and wild donkeys, adding a natural wildlife element to this remote wilderness journey.

In the evening, arrive in Coqen for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Zhari Namco Lake, Dangra Yumtso, Changthang wilderness landscapes, highland roads, wildlife photography, and night sky (Milky Way) photography.

After an early breakfast, continue deeper into the Changthang wilderness of northern Tibet. Today’s journey remains within vast plateau landscapes, with endless grasslands, snow mountains, and open highland roads.

The first stop is Zhari Namco, one of the largest lakes in the Ngari region and the third-largest salt lake in Tibet. The lake appears deep blue under strong highland sunlight, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding barren terrain and distant mountains.

With its remote location and minimal human presence, Zhari Namco is ideal for wide-angle landscape photography and capturing the raw atmosphere of the northern plateau.

Continue driving through the Changthang wilderness, where wildlife such as wild donkeys and Tibetan antelope may occasionally appear along the route.

In the afternoon, arrive at the sacred Dangra Yumtso Lake, an important site in Bon (pre-Buddhist) culture. The long, narrow lake stretches across the plateau like a ribbon, surrounded by vast empty landscapes that create a strong sense of scale and mystery.

The light changes quickly in this region, especially in the afternoon and evening, making it ideal for landscape photography and drone shooting when conditions allow.

In the evening, arrive at Wenbu South Village, a quiet settlement beside Dangra Yumtso. On clear nights, you can photograph the starry sky and Milky Way over the lake, with reflections of the mountains and night sky creating one of the most peaceful night scenes in northern Tibet.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Dangra Yumtso sunrise, Daze Co Lake, Changthang wildlife (Tibetan antelope & wild donkeys), Siling Co, black-necked cranes (seasonal), and northern Tibet grassland landscapes.

In the early morning, head to the lakeshore to photograph the sunrise over Dangra Yumtso. As the first light spreads across the water, the lake gradually shifts between soft gold and deep blue tones, creating a calm and expansive plateau scene.

After sunrise photography, leave Wenbu South Village and continue driving through the vast northern Tibet grasslands. Today’s route passes through multiple lakes, offering continuous highland scenery of lakes, grasslands, and snow mountains.

Arrive at Daze Co Lake, an untouched highland lake surrounded by open wilderness. This area is also known for frequent sightings of Tibetan antelope and wild donkeys, making it ideal for wildlife and landscape photography.

The surrounding terrain features natural erosion patterns and valley structures, which are especially suitable for drone photography when weather conditions allow.

In the afternoon, continue to Siling Co, the largest lake in Tibet. It is also an important habitat for black-necked cranes and other migratory birds during certain seasons.

The vast lake surface, combined with grasslands and distant mountains, creates a pure and minimalistic highland landscape. In the evening light, the lake becomes even more transparent, with warm tones spreading across the plateau.

After a long day crossing remote terrain, continue along the highway and arrive in Bange for overnight stay.

Today’s Photography Highlights: Elephant Gate (Namtso), Namtso Lake shoreline, Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, northern Tibet highway photography, and highland blue-hour landscapes.

After breakfast, leave Bange and continue west toward Namtso Lake, one of the most iconic sacred lakes in Tibet. The drive passes through vast northern Tibet grasslands, alpine lakes, and distant snow mountains, maintaining a strong plateau landscape atmosphere.

Arrive at the Elephant Gate (Namtso North Shore viewpoint), a natural rock formation shaped like an elephant facing the lake. It extends toward the water and stands opposite the Nyenchen Tanglha mountain range, creating one of the most recognizable compositions in Namtso photography.

On clear days, Namtso reveals deep blue tones that shift with light and weather conditions. The lake, shoreline rocks, snow mountains, and sky together form a highly layered highland landscape, ideal for wide-angle and aerial photography.

If access to Elephant Gate is restricted due to weather or local conditions, the itinerary will switch to Tashi Dor Island, another classic viewpoint of Namtso with equally strong visual perspectives.

In the afternoon, cross the Nagenla Pass (5190m) and begin the return journey to Lhasa. Along the way, the Nyenchen Tanglha mountain range remains visible, offering continuous snow mountain scenery.

Arrive in Lhasa by evening, marking the completion of this epic Tibet photography expedition.

Today marks the end of your Ngari and northern Tibet photography journey.

According to your flight or train schedule, our staff will arrange your transfer to Lhasa Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station.

Over the past 13 days, you have traveled across Everest, Mount Kailash, Zanda Earth Forest, Changthang wilderness, and Namtso Lake, capturing some of the most iconic landscapes in Tibet.

From snow mountains and sacred lakes to desert plateaus, wildlife, and star-filled skies, this journey has covered the full spectrum of western Tibet’s natural and cultural beauty.
